How can just owning a guitar help me to play it? I need some type of instructional material because I don't know how to play music.

i learn to play guitar by my self and i think that if it wasn't because a friend gave his acoustic guitar it would have taken me many years. watch youtube videos, try to get use to the hand positions it really depends on how much time you want to spend on it.

I strongly recommend learning from a good teacher, nothing do better than that. Other things like books and especially videos does so good when you are learning from a good teacher. Another important thing is buying a guitar. Learning guitar requires serious consistency in practicing.

Hi, I think the best way to learn is probably by learning off someone who can already play. This is often the quickest way as you can solve problems really fast and learn by example. But if you don't have access to a tutor, then probably using some form of interactive CD or DVD disc for the computer would be a good idea. I think there are quite a few teach yourself guitar books which include CD/DVD's for use on your computer. I did buy one myself, but unfortunately I just never had the time to actually use it. I was already playing the keyboard at the time, and doing lots of other things.
As long as you plan your sessions and stick to them, then you can probably learn quite effectively using interative CD/DVD books. Good luck with it anyway.

I would say play Guitar Hero and and have the feel as a pro guitarist and if you feel you like it learning any other method would be a breeze. I am a guitar player of 10 years and i feel after playing Guitar hero my skills just got better.
