I am living in an apartment and my partner and I are wanting to get a dog. We dont have a garden but live very close to a park. The dog needs to be small so I can manage it. I am at home all the time as I am unable to work and would love a companion. Also it is very important to us that the breed is good with children. We are both dog lovers and I a hoping that you could give me some advice on what breed might be good for us! Thanks peeps x

I suggest for you to get a maltese or a yorkie. They are small and friendly. The only thing that I don't like about them is they bark like crazy. They can be trained though. I have a male maltese and is so cute and cuddly (my daughter loves him) but I've had it with his pointless barking one day and got him a bark collar. It stopped the pointless barking and he doesn't bark as much now even with the collar off. Maltese dogs don't shed much also. They are smart dogs. My maltese tries to outsmart me once in awhile it's funny. Maltese love bathing but needs to be walked regularly or it tends to appear timid. We are planning to get a yorkie next time.
My stepdaughter has a female mini aussie shepherd that is so smart and easy to train BUT she chews everything she sees around. She has broken a lot of things already and pees whenever she gets excited it's embarrassing to other people. Don't get an aussie shepherd...too hyper and mess around a lot. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. Wehave actually considered a yorkie but are concerned about the barking. Not thought about a maltese but will look into it. What are they like with children? Also, excuse my ignorance but what is a bark collar? x

Maltese dogs are very good with children. We have 4 kids in the house and the only complain I hear from them once in awhile is the barking. This is the reason I had to get a bark collar from Petsmart. It's a collar with a zapper. You wrap it around a dog's neck and it zaps or shocks the dog's neck whenever it tries to bark. It works with a small battery. The best time to put it on is when the dog is NOT in the barking mood. That way the dog will not think that he/she is being punished. Trust me you will need to get a bark collar if you get a yorkie cause you would want to sleep in silence.

I think the best dog for apartment is a dog with short hair couse i have an american boxer(rly cute ^^ ) his hair is short but still there is plenty of them flying around the house i don't even want to think what would happen if i had a dog with long hair, btw boxers aren't that big so you can leave him in a cage while you are not home so he won't do anything bad and won't have bad thoughts,so my suggestion is an American Boxer and no they don'y droll like in cartoons :)

what might be an idea when you want a dog with specific behaviour is doing what one of my brothers is planning. he wants a rescued dog but he also definitely wants an alsatian (don't think alsatians are ideal apartment dogs though...), there are lots of charities that rescue specific breeds of dogs so he's looking into them. so once you've decided on a breed (i think there were some very good suggestions before this) this means that you could get an adult dog whose behaviour is known about. just a thought.

I think ideally I would want to get a rescue dogs as there are so many out there that need good homes. I think like you say once we have an idea of the breed to go from there. thanks for comment!

Some small breeds of dogs yap or bark a lot. They don't need as much walking as a large breed. I would suggest a toy poodle. They are lovely and sensible around children. They are intelligent and trustworthy. He or she would be a loving companion for you. You could have superb walks together in the park. He or she would need brushing and combing plus a haircut every 8 weeks. Good luck choosing a dog to live with you in your apartment.

Hey. Yeah I dont want to have a nosiy dog as I dont want to upset the neighbours! I hear that poodles are intelligent but someone has said they are so intelligent they can beome neurotic. I guess it depends how you train and treat them. What are your thoughts on bark collars? I really dont like the idea of them...

I grew up with miniature dachshunds. They are GREAT dogs! Small, smart and very personable! And almost any dog can get along with kids, provided the kids are taught how to handle a dog. They still need daily exercise (just like any dog), but they require a much shorter walk than a larger dog (I take mine around 2 miles every day).
A lot of small dogs are not good with kids, so make sure you ask specifically if the dog you are considering has had experience with kids.

I havent considered this breed but will look into them. Luckily my partner is happy to walk any dog we get as I am unable to do this. It is really important tht the breed is good with kids as we are planning to have them soon (hopefully!). Thanks for comments.

Definitely a small dog, and probably one of the kinds that don't shed as much because they have a different type of hair. Chihuahuas, Yorkiepoos, breeds like that, the kind that 'celebrities' tote around. Yorkiepoos would probably like children better, but most any dog that you get from someplace where it was exposed to kids is more likely to be good with children.

Chiuahuas are such funny looking dogs arent they! But you are right they would not have problem with malting. We will definately need to expose the dog to kids from an early age too. Do you have any dogs at the moment? Thanks for comments.

I have a shih tzu and they are great dogs and perfect for an apartment. I have had my dog for 10 years. He is quite smart and will follow you everywhere you go except the bathroom. He sits outside the door sleep on his bed next to my bed. He is loyal and a great watchdog. Shih Tzu's are not a yap yap dog at all. They bark when they here usually noise or if the doorbell rings. Good luck in your decision.

Well i lived in a small apartment, studio type. but i have currently 2 dogs. small breed. mix tho, shitzu/pomeranian mixed and a dachshund/shitzu mixed. i used to have purebreed shitzu, pomeranian and labrador retriever i just sell them coz i dont have enough space and dont have a prob with that barking things. all of them are very friendly and playfull. they all seldom bark, i guess it depends on how you raise them or treat them. dachshunds and pomeranians one of their traits they're barky but not with me. i dont even know how to trained dogs. i just love dogs, i take good care of them. but to play safe, try shitzu.

I would say either a beagle or a jack russell terrier, or even a rat terrier. The only problem is they make bark alot, but you could get the bark collars just long enough to train them not to bark. Make sure they are potty trained. :)

I think something little is best. I have MS and dont think I could cope with anything too big. What is a bark collar?
