During my younger years, I remember playing street games. Tumbang preso, luksong baka, jolens, tex, piko, sipa, chinese garter, patintero. Wow, I miss those days. You really have to move every part of your body. Now, we are already in the age of technology, gone are those street games. Kids not are so much into computer games making them glued on their seats even for longer hours. Wish we could have street games back. It is also a good way of exercising.

hi jules! i also miss those days of playing such kind of outdoors games!
i think that is more healthy and helpful for children better than just staying on the computer...b playing those kinds of games, the children will grow stronger coz its actually a nice way of exercising for them...imagine all the running and jumping! hehehehe and its more sociable...they can have more friends and its more fun for them...and that will really makes them feel that they are children!
i also wish that these kinds of games will become popular again!
and yes i am happy when i see some children here in my neighborhood who's still playing some games like that...

Hi ckyerea. Thanks for your response. Street games have more social benefits. You get to meet friends, who are real people. You get to move around making you more fit, I believe. You get to meet friends from online games as well, but they are virtual friends.

hi kenchobi...
well that's the common thing now...it just so happen that here in my place kids do not belong to upper class and so they don't have computers in their house...and it will cost them much if they go on rentals...
i hope some parents still encourage their children in playing these kinds of activities...these children are missing a lot in their childhood...i think.

yeah, i agree with you ..games before require a lot of body movement and done with a lot of groups forming a squad of team battling for a competition, wherein in the current times..children are confine to play alone with a virtual friends for an hours with lesser social interaction...

Hi. Those days are really gone now. Aside from the existence of the computer games, psp and other electronic games, there are some other factors that we can no longer see kids playing at the streets. There are lots of vehicles now that prevent kids staying outside and also a lot of bad influences. I miss those days. And how about "shato", "taguan" and also "luksong tinik"?
PEACE!!!

The games play before looks to me like an exercises and it is done with a lot of friends..more social interaction develop between playmates...all the games you mention is also part of my childhood..and I even taught it to my nieces and nephew. The games that is being play now days is all related to computer games and lot of children are addicted to it and i do not really like it as their is a lesser chance of face to face social interaction between playmates..

Playing games before is more exciting and a way to gain more playmates as games could not begin without a present of a buddy or groups of friends. Their is a lot of social interaction and various games develop which strengthen the physical and mental creativity of the children. The games before which are done outside a vacant lot in a neighborhood or beside a street require less expensive toys and almost all of the things used in the games are not expensive and even hand made. While, games being play by children are more into computer games which involve no or absence of social interaction and in some case with less playmates. A child now days could play even alone and just facing a computer for an hours, which is very bad for the health of a child. With little movement involves, a lot of children becomes fat and eve got eyesight problems being glued to computer screen for an hours...

You forgot syato and habulan base or moro-moro. Kite flying, too. You are correct. These games kinda stimulate the senses. I think the children still play some of these games in school, during breaks and dismissal time.

I missed those games also. My favorite are taguan, tumbang preso and patintero. I remember I had an accident when I was 12 years old while playing luksong baka. I failed to jump over and bam! my head hit the ground then I became unconscious. Later that day, I remember waking up inside my Aunt's room telling me I had bump my head while playing. I never played luksong baka since then.

Hi jules67!
Seems like we came from the same generation where computer games could only be play on nintendo and family computer.
I think children of our generation have more active and physical games, and have a more intimate or close relationship with our playmates. I remember that we often go also to the rice field and swim in the river which was still very clean back then.
I think games like this make our generation more physically fit than the children right now which is more prone to obesity.
Have a nice day!

I remember playing those games when i was young... and i could still see kids playing chinese garter, patintero, jolens, piko, and sipa... those are the kids who belong to families who are considered as financially average... some of them do not have computers at home... so they entertain themselves by playing outdoors... i have a niece who loves computer games... but still goes outside to play such games with kids in the neighborhood...

i love street games. i still play... considering i am, let's just say, an adult now... jackstones and other indoor games (not the outdoor ones anymore). i still value playing outdoors. i do find it fun and entertaining. i love to watch kids outside flying their kites during the summer and girls playing chinese garters or other versions of it. i love "shato", philippine version of football (i dont know what to call it), patintero, jump rope (great way to exercise by the way), etc. etc. etc.
i remembered the first time i went abroad and since most of my co-workers are filipinos, we went to the beach and played patintero... foreigners look around thinking "what the heck are they doing?"... but it was fun and all of us miss it... its like being a child again... :)

As I saw your profile, we are sharing the same age bracket and I also miss the days of street games. And yes, I think this is better than computer games. Besides it's free and can exercise our body, it teaches the kids to socialize with each other especially about teamwork.
I suppose there are organizations who help our kids to continue these street games, and we a parents can be a useful tool to promote them.
Thanks!

Yes you are very right. We do miss some childhood games. The days are changing faster than our thoughts. At least in our minds they stay active. Long live childhood.

I love street games also. Even though now online games has taking its part. Furthermore, online computer games have many advantages and disadvantages when compared to traditional games. Online gaming allows someone to play whenever they want and the lack of set up and clean up needed to play. There are also some disadvantages to online gaming including the lack of communication and family interaction. Street games are usually played in a family or friends oriented setting. The whole point it to have fun with everyone. Although online gaming more interesting, I still prefer street games.
