2010 presidential election is so near that all these aspiring presidential are coming out of their shells to make the public aware of their intent to lead the country. Just typing the word "lead" brings a hint of sadness to me. At a forum for presidential aspirants hosted by the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines, Senator Jamby Madrigal mentioned her intention of abolishing BPO industry in the country. Business Process Outsourcing- Call Centers the term most of us are aware of. She said that this industry did not bring wealth to the country, but just brought wealth to other nations. She said "BPO made us a cheap country", with all the conviction in her.
Come to think of this... Even before the BPO industry developed here in the Philippines, this country is already shameful. Jamby and those in the goverment (I am not saying all) can very well answer WHY! THERE ARE OTHER CONCERNS HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES THAT ARE MORE SIGNIFICANT TO FOCUS ONTO. Okay, if this industry did not generate wealth for the country, then she can focus on how the government can provide "GOOD LIFE" to its people. Why not work first on making the Philippines as rich as other countries, why can't we be?! Making a dim-witted comment about eliminating the business that provides thousands of jobs to its people is a total non-sense. BPO Employees (like me) pay their taxes on time, unfortunately, if it is their time to ask the government of their benefits, most of the time it will take you some Jurassic years, and some times nothing happens! Did they have transparency on where did are taxes go?! Working in BPO's did not and will not make us as rich as her, so she better stop and find more SENSIBLE thing to accomplish for the country. This is if she really has genuine intentions to help, and not just to gain more power and wealth.
Another thing, I read a blog, http://www.newmedia.com.ph/jamby-madrigal-defiles-cory-aquino-memorial-service/, wherein Jamby gave a yellow bracelet on our countrys' former President Cory Aquino's cortege. When you look at the yellow bracelet, you will see a small photo of her. This is 100% lack of respect to the family and the people who at that is mourning of an important loss. Who will ever think of campaigning at that kind of event?! Who? Only inconsiderate people, Only her...

do you know why we are not a rich nation? because one of those reasons. "BPO" it is one of the expression of liberal globalization. it is part of the package. they make globalization sounds like chocolate that people failed to see it's true effects. economically it is detrimental to us. because it is killing our own national industries (industries owned by Filipino). the truth is our local producers can't compete with foreign companies, the tendency is that this industries are force to close down. this incidents happened as early as 1992 when Ramos sign the liberalization policies. as i know Jamby is one of local producers in the country. she is just protecting her internist but the positive thing about it is that she is also trying lift our local economy in a way. look i am not a Jamby fan here ok but i am just studying economy of the country. all of that is base only by economic studies that we have. i hope that though you are not an economist i am challenging people to study the economy of the country too. because we can't change the economic situation of the country then we well have more problems ahead of us. i am hoping that there will be a true economic change that will strengthen our industries that we will be able to stand globally speaking.

Yes I understand your point Grace. I think, we are talking about different industries here. I think the picture you are portraying is more like this, for example, a local rubber shoes manufacturer from our country, close down because most of the people prefer to buy imported rubber shoes. A chocolate factory, close down, because an imported brand is dominating the market. Is this more like it?
As far as I know, there is no BPO owned by any Filipino that closed down because they have been affected by the growth of BPO industry whether this is offshore or nearshore outsourcing (if you have one please let me know ) It is called BPO from its acronym- Business Process Outsource- Outsource meaning companies are taking a "part or specific" function to a 3rd party provider. On our country's case, most of these are customer service related- contact center services.
Even some companies in our country do outsource some of their business functions, a local company (owned by Filipino) I know, outsource their human resources. They are still in business right now, they were never affected of the rise of the BPO industry.
Remember, Pres. Obama says no to outsourcing as well? It is because they are the most impacted, first because of the taxes, some of their people lose job because most of the companies there outsource functions of their business to other countries like ours, India etc. And I understand them, economically speaking BPO industry is affecting their economy.

it would also be better if she (Jamby) just said that she is looking at strengthening our industries so we can be able to stand globally speaking- this will show more compassion to your countrymen- this is more positive, right?! Rather than telling to everyone that you will get rid of the business that pays them, and it is cheap- this is a little painful.

I am not working in a BPO industry but I can see how it contributed to the economy as well. The money brought in by them has pretty much saved our economy from further deteriorating. Since many OFW lost their jobs it seems the BPO industry has been able to survive the crisis and many retained their jobs and received a rather large salary compared to those that work in a non BPO industry.
I guess Jamby just made a wrong call for that. I think the reason behind this reasoning is it is one of GMA's project that largely increased and was started by GMA administration to flourish. I think Jamby is thinking that since it is GMA pet project destroying this would make her more popular. Well I guess this is just a wrong move for her. It could have her more popular if she could have touch on the issues that has made the Arroyo administration bad like the ZTE deals, Hello Garci scandal and the Agriculture fertilizer scams. This are all the issues many politicians are using to make their name float. I wonder who the political advisers of Jamby that made her rather put in a bad light. I am pretty sure that the people who saw this would not be impress and make her less of a choice for presidentiables.

Correct! I mean it would not hurt you to think of more sensible issues to help your countrymen. Some people really think they have brains even if they have not. Like her. I just don't know why she won as a Senator. I hope she would not be there anymore.
