It is a homecoming symbol for the return of the late Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. His supporters tied a yellow ribbon along the streets and roads of Metro Manila to support his return instead he was assassinated. It was inspired by the song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree". Later the late President Aquino used the symbol again to continue his late husband's struggle for democracy.

Hi Dong 1 I guess insofar as the Philippines is concerned, yellow would stand for democracy as that is the favorite color of the late President Cory which she used during her elections and all other public activities and rallies. I also guess it came from that song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" which is about someone coming home from prison so maybe it can also be a universal symbol for freedom.

I am afraid that even if we had a thousand symbols of democracy, if the situation is still the same, i really doubt it would make much change in the country's situation. we must make real action, and continue on what others have done so that we can ensure that democracy will in this country..only then, we can pick symbols..

Yellow Ribbon is indeed one of the symbol of democracy in our country. Many believe including me that the late President Cory Aquino is the main reason why we are enjoying this kind of life. She restored democracy in our country and in that time, she's known for the color yellow. Since Cory Aquino is the icon of democracy, I think most of us will agree that yellow is a symbol of democracy.
