At least thirty minutes, though consider running outside also, you’ll gain the discipline and fair more enjoyment. Don’t have the ‘all or nothing’ attitude, five minutes a day will improve your cardio fitness, although aim for 30. Ensure you warm up and cool down. Start slowly and steadily increase the speed pace, after exercise stretch correctly. Not only will you ward of injuries, you’ll also increase agility and flexibility. Eat a small snack full of carbs and protein afterwards, apple’s are a good choice.

What you have to remember is that on a treadmill, you're not going anywhere! You're basically walking in place. Why do you think you'd see anything different because you're walking in place! The same is true of a stationary bike - you can pedal all you want, you're not moving an inch.

It all depends on how hard you're running and what your goals are.
If your goal is fat-burning then 20 minutes at a very high intensity will do the trick. High intensity interval training (HIT) has proven to work the best for me. I've followed the recommendations at www.bodyforlife.com with excellent success. When using HIT on a treadmill, it really encourages your body to burn fat all day, instead of the 20 minutes that you're working out.
If you're looking for cardio fitness however and you're running at a slow-medium paced speed, the first 20 minutes are pretty much worthless. So if you run for 30 minutes, the last 10 minutes are where the work is really done.
Hope this helps!
