Do you go out of your way to help?

I was wondering how many of you go out of your way to help your friends when they need something, whether it's big or small? I notice that some people are always helping others, to the point that they don't have time to think about their own wants and needs. While I see that there are other people who worry more about themselves, and what they need, not caring if a friend is in need.
Of course, everybody lies somewhere in the middle, and I hate to say it, but I think more about myself than my friends. If somebody needs something, I'll always try to help, but only within reason. I see some friends who do so much for others, who don't appreciate it.
So, do you think more about others, or yourself? Don't think it's a bad thing if you say yourself, it doesn't mean that you do nothing for friends, I just mean would you consistently help them, at your own expense?

I used to be that person who always went out of the way, on the limb, day or night, regardless of what was going on in my own life... but as time went on I came to realize that 98% of those people were just using me and would never (or never did) reciprocate even in the form of just lending an ear.... After about 10 years of doing that, its worn on me physically and emotionally and I've eliminated those types of people from my life. I hate having to be that way, but it just became more apparent that no matter how much I might have cared about those people/that person... they did not care as equally. I don't need or want leeches in my life.
