getting rid of books

I am in a situation where I need to "lighten my load" a little bit. I keep going through my books thinking of getting rid of a few of them. I just can't do it! Even if I haven't read one in years, I just can't dispose of my books! Does anyone else get rid of books? Or do you always keep all of them?

I have a REALLY hard time getting rid of books as well. It doesn't matter if i have read them a dozen times, or only read them once and didn't even really like it. I just can't get rid of them. I suppose if i were to sell them or give them away to someone who i know would appreciate them, that would make it a little easier, but my books are..god, saying they are like my children would be a little extreme, but i do have attatchment to them. When i read a book i feel i have persoanlly invested myself in them, and owe it to them to keep them around, and lend them to others so they too can share the knowledge and enjoyment i have recieved from them.
Wow..that makes me sound like a real loony, doesn't it? *lol*

Well, you aren't any more "loony" than the rest of us book lovers!!
I like the way you said you felt you had personally invested yourself in them. Yeah, I hear that! I put the time and effort to run the whole book through my brain... so I did invest! Thanks!!

I completely agree, it is hard to get rid of books. For some reason they are incredibly hard to throw away! It is simpler to donate them to charity bookshops and even easier to sell them on but very difficult to actually throw them away no matter what their topic or condition is.
Maybe its the fact that "book-burning" has such evil overtones being synonymous with tyrannical censorship or maybe its because on some level we recognise each and every book we own as being another stab at immortality by some poor writer somewhere; I don't know! But I definitely reccomend the charity route, it'll just feel better and is what I normally do.

Yeah, I don't even like throwing books away that I don't agree with! It seems wrong somehow. I know I write some and I would like my efforts to be respected a little more than that! Even if you don't agree give it to someone who does! thanx

You can donate them to local charities. If you want to make a bit of money, try taking them to a used book store. You might not get a lot but you'll get some money. Or if you don't want to drag them around, you can host a garage sale. I keep all of my books just in case I might want to reread them in the future. you can also keep some you think you might read again. Good luck in getting rid of your books.

Good advice. I have given some to charities in the past. Only a few I felt I really could live without though! and some of those I have wished I had back from time to time for various reasons!

Hi macdlinglinger, I can honestly say that one of my biggest regrets is getting rid of lots of my books when moving abroad, I really thought there were too many to transport and then worried about fitting them all into the house. I so wish I'd never done it, i still look for books I no longer possess and curse myself I for being so stupid. Nowadays I have to rely on the local bookswaps to get something to read but I will never again part with anything from my core library. My advice, just don't do it, you'll regret it.

I have books that I got 18 years ago, and I still have yet to read them. LOL! I don't want to get rid of them, however, because I know that sooner or later, I will get around to reading them. Books are one of my greatest passions--I can't bear to part with any of them.

I know... they are like my children, some of the books are!! I guess I get emotionally attached by living in the story being told! Oh well....
