I just received the latest issue of Time Magazine in which the cover story is titled "The Myth About Exercise". The story says that exercise doesnt make you loose weight because when you exercise you give yourself permission to reward yourself with food and often end up eating more calories than if you didnt exercise. What do you think?

Well i think all depends upon your metabolic activities, you don't necessarily loose considerable amount of weight when you exercise, but in all it is actually doing you good when you exercise.... rewarding yourself with some more than you hunger after exercise will definitely not account in any way for loosing your weight.

I don't think that's entirely accurate for everyone. Some people are able to exercise and stick to a healthy diet. When you exercise, hunger is staved off for maybe a couple hours at a time, but when some people finish, they feel a huge hunger. The body feels the need to make up for the calories burned off during rigorous exercise. A person may choose to eat whatever is convenient or filling, sometimes stuffing themselves to diminish the feeling of hunger. However, not everyone does this and do not feel the need to give themselves food "rewards" after exercising. For me, it almost feels like a waste of time and energy to burn off calories and then go double the intake of what I burned off by eating whatever is easy to access. I find that taking breaks between bouts of exercise to consume something relatively healthy and low in calories replenishes me enough to get through maybe another forty minutes to an hour of exercise. And, of course, exercise is something one should not overdo. Everyone needs to know when to stop, take a break, grab something to eat, rest, etc. I think it's mostly about finding the right balance.

It sounds like it was a one sided opinionated article. I know for a fact that exercise helps you lose weight. I have read articles of people who started running and started losing weight. When they modified the diet, they lost even more weight. Of course, if all you do is reward yourself with those extra caloried foods you won't lose. duh! Usually people exercise to lose weight and their diets follow suite.
