What is Facebook?

I know I sound like a caveman but I just am a bit late with the news these days. I recently made an account over on Facebook and I didn't understand what it was all about. I went to the support section and it said that Facebook was a place to meet new people. But I didn't find it anything like that. All I saw were some companies advertising there. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? What I didn't get?

It is precisely a social networking site with many other facilities like games,polls,quizzes,and a large amount of communities.It also has many competitions and giveaways to participate in.It is very similar to orkut but its turning a bit better these days.
