Pain-filled day today as the twins are leaving me in a few hours to go with their mother. Let's not talk about that as I will turn on the tap again!
Decided that comfort food is the order of the day.so will make a Shepherd's Pie as all the family is going to the airport except me. They do not want me to go. I have embarrassed them all so many times at airports.
So I am going to use ground beef, with a tomato based sauce containing garlic, onions, thyme and a little hot pepper. Oh, Worcestershire sauce is my secret ingredient! A good dollop of that will be added.
Will brown this and add carrots and peas. Then top with mashed potatoes and I am going to add butter and cream. (yes, it is going to be a high cholesterol day),
I will also add crumbled grilled bacon to the mashed potatoes and some cheese.
Then about 20 minutes before it is ready I will add crumbled corn flakes. This will be served with a salad. Dessert will be ripe bananas and mangoes in some of the mango juice.
Do you cook and eat forbiddeen food when you are upset? What toppings would you use on a Shepherd's Pie?

My goodness no I don't cook forbidden food when I'm upset thankfully or I'd be 400 pounds I nam sure. I simply can not afford even a half a pound but your meal sounds so delicious I am sure I have just put on anothe five pounds thinking about it and trust me that's almost the truth with me. Grrrr. Thank You my friend. I hope your day will brighten. Family is important and if I was there you and I would both be left behind crying.

I eat things that are horrible for me all the time. I don't need a special reason.
When I make Shepherd's Pie I make a brown gravy, brown sup some ground beef, add some onion, carrots, and corn. Top it with Mashed Potatoes that have cheese stirred into them. I like the idea of adding corn flakes. I have never tried that.

I have only made Shepard's pie a couple of times, and I use very basic ingredients. Ground beef, gravy, corn, and mashed potatoes. That's basically how mom made it, so that's good enough for me.
Yesterday I was quite stressed and having a terrible day, so I ate a couple of chocolate bars. That made me feel better instantly. Of course the stuff I am upset over is not nearly as big as the stuff you're upset over!

Never thought of it that way! That gives me a good excuse to eat more chocolate!

Oh chocolate works wonders when I am stressed. Remember that chocolate comes from the cocoa bean and that bean is a vegetable. So eat up your vegetables!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May i come eat w/u that sounds so good. I love sheperd's pie. Haven't made one in a long time. I have never added the bacon & corn flakes, will have to try that. I do put cheese on top of the potatoes.
i know it has been an awful day for u & u have been on my mind all day. It's probably better u don't go to the airport but if i wanted to i would. I think u are being really smart & very brave for not going. Remember i'm here if u need to talk.
hope u & all the family enjoy that delicious sounding supper. LOVE & HUGS, JO

My daughter has been wonderful. I thank you so much for all the love and support you gave to me. It is still rough but they are talking to me daily. On Wednesday they go to London to spend a few days with my youngest son before they fly out.

Hello cynthiann, well your shepherd's pie recipe sounds pretty similar to mine except I add tomatoes to the meat sauce. I sometimes beat an egg into the mashed potatoes and always sprinkle it with paprika on top and usually add a couple of dollops of butter at the end and brown it off under the grill. But cornflakes on top, no way, is that an American thing. I couldn't go there at all.
For us it will be several months before we have shepherds pie on the menu again, it's definitely a winter food, comfort food on the cold wet damp nights. I would never call shepherds pie forbidden food, think about it as comfort food instead. Hope it cheers you up.

No I am not from the USA. Was from the U.K. but spent the last 39 years living in the West indies. The corn flakes are pounded first to make a crunchy crust and added about 20 mins before the end of cooking to give a crusty crunch. It does taste good. It did help. I have looked after my grandtwins from they wee 22 months and now they are 39 months and they are now going across the world to live with their Mother. It is just that i miss them so much but I will get used to it in time.

Lamb is a little gamey from what I hear, I have never had lamb, but when I have had Shepherd's Pie before, it was always made with beef or chicken. With Shepherd's Pie, you can always substitute the lamb with beef or chicken, that is what many of my Irish friends and family members have told me because not all Irish like lamb. My boyfriend's family (they are Irish), they make Shepherd's Pie with beef. There is no harm in it, in fact, it taste really good with beef in it. You can use pork as well, but nothing beats beef and chicken in my book.
Be creative! It's Shepherd's Pie!

hi cynthiann hatley oh that sounds so good.I
always loved shepherd's pie. that has to be the'
ultimate in comfort food, when I was in my own'
apartment and felt upset, my favorite was shrimp
scampi and tomatomeat sauce on spaghetti, and I
often cooked this just for myself.myson and Ihad
different schedules so I ate alone which I never
really minded as I could cook the things I really
liked just for me.On a shepherds pie toppings would
be cheese, sharp of course along with the bacon.

I am sorry I haven't been responding to your discussions, but I can promise that it's not just yours I am not responding to! I have a lot to catch up with on my inbox! As for shepherd's pie, I do not make this. As for cooking, I am just learning basically, and as for forbidden food, I have been known to eat chocolate or too much left overs when upset, though I am depressed alot!

Oh, girl... no food is forbidden to me lol. So you had grandkids visiting, was that it? That sounds like a wonderful, excellent, lovingly prepared meal and I would have loved to share it with you (along with some fun stories about the kids).
I haven't made shepherd's pie in a long while but I top mine with shredded cheese, pepper, and garlic powder. I actually blend in some cheddar cheese soup with the mashed potatoes too, and I also add worcestershire sauce to my browned hamburger, along with diced onion, carrots and peas. I don't think I used tomato based sauce for mine, I used beefy onion soup mix lol.
