Good morning to you as in my time, it is 743am and i just came from work. during my working hours, a co-worker of mine asked me a question that made me think of which is the best way to answer a question such as this...
you are to talking to a person who has been blind SINCE BIRTH and you were asked,
WHAT IS RED?
in what way will you describe red to a person who has not seen any single thing in his/her whole life?
well i was thinking of talking about feelings but then still you have to say objects to relate to RED right.
how will you explain red to a blind person?
just made me think when a co-worker asked me this...

Hello again.
Well red can stand for more than one feeling or object. I think you should tell that person much about red, in order for him to "form a picture" in his mind about it:
Like red is the color for love and romantics, but also for blood, red is the color for good apples (if they are not green of course :D) and also the color of other fruits. Tomatoes are also red and so is ketchup and we must remember cherries and strawberries, right ?

Hello skbh12,
That is a very interesting question. I wrote 62 pages of codes to try to describe colors and I guess the best way is to say the following:
The specific angle at which radiation and light is reflected of a molecule and into our iris system and decoded by our brain.
But the question itself is one of those that can't be answered. Like "what is good?" or "what is evil?" or "what is reality?". It is impossible to describe what our brain shows us. Cheers!

I think it is a tough question. How and in what way should i explain the color red when it is very hard to do so. Maybe, I will just associate it the way Psychologists does. That red is the color of anger, war and blood. But on the other hand, it is the color of love, strength and courage.

This is a difficult problem for a person who has been blind since birth. To be honest ,i don't how to answer this question, because no need to explain to a normal people, however,we will to explain a blind man!Although we can't explain to a blind what is red,we can tell him the sun.en !is the sun.Although,he can't see the sun, he can fell the sun, tell he that is the red! That's the best red!Tell he the red is a color that can give people warm, courage,it enables people to love life! The blind as he is, he will a colorful life!

i think it is no use to describe for those blinds what colors are .just let them try to imagine something such as rose and blood. we all kown we cant describe a lot of abstract things ,so is color. we only can sense it but cant tell.

red stands for a lot of meaning. i will that person touch a hot surface and i can say that is fire and red can be associated with fire. hot and you can get burned. fire can also be associated with a feeling for another person LOVE. so red can be a nice feeling but you can also get burned. i will let that person also taste tabasco and that is also one of the things that i can associate red for, chili hot

It really all depends on how you interpret red, I think. At that point, it's more a state of being than anything else.
For example, you could have them smell a rose and tell them that that's one aspect of red, but red covers many aspects. Have them feel the beat of their heart and tell them that's red, too, like the blood in their veins. The way strawberries and watermelon taste is red.
There's not really any set way to describe it. It's a state of being. If you can't see red as a color then it can't be anything more than a metaphor.

of course most blind are interested to know how the colors look like. and we know that its not easy coz we dont want to hurt their feelings. one best thing to tell them the color red is to use their sense of feelings and touch. like if he feel hot and feels looks like his sweating then you can tell him that, thats the color red.

It all depends on whether your co-worker has a sense of humor or not. You could try and play it off and say that red is like cherry kool-aid. You could relate it to a person's face when they get hot from running or exercise. You could also describe what red signifies. For example: red is a bright color that signifies, heat, blood, energy, anger, passion, warning signs and love. You could also relate it to flowers like a rose. He may not be able to see with his eyes but he can see by feeling. I know it sounds a bit weird but you could bring a rose and tell him that this is a flower that is normally red and it signifies love when given to another person(in society). Or you could be scientific and talk about how humans can not see infrared wavelengths. Another possibility is that you can respond mystically and say that red is a just a color that society places on things but has no value, because we can make anything red for the most part. We change the color of the flowers, shirts, nails, walls. Ooooh or you can say red signifies hot spices like chili powder or cayenne. I have poor eyesight and when I'm in the dark with no contacts I can not identify colors or much of anything.
