My kids want a dog, but we lost our dog to Lymphoma 4 years ago. It was very painful and expensive. Don't want to go through the pain of losing another animal.

Maybe tell your kids what you feel and ask them to think about what they have to go through if they get a dog. Sometimes kids are less clear about their feeling; they may just miss to have a dog in the house and want to have another dog to fill the bit which is missing. If they can understand you, maybe they will be able to tell you what they really want.
