What the World Really Thinks of Americans

I have heard some scoffing and ridicule towards Americans here in the forums, and also various other places on the net. What do you think of Americans? Regardless of what you have heard before, has Mylot created a better understanding for Americans or does it prove what you have all ready heard?
I am an American, and I love the fact that I am, and really couldn't imagine life in any other country. My country has pulled some shady things, but we are not all fault for what happens here!

I have seen some of the scoffings and criticisms, and I, as an American, know as well as anyone that we are not perfect. BUT, all-in-all, there is no place on earth I would rather live. Faults and all, in my opinion and experience, we still have one of the greatest countries in the world.

We sure do! And if it's so terrible here, then why do people from countries all over the word come here for a fresh start? We have our faults, but we have many things that intrigue people to come here!

You're right, and people have been coming here from foreign lands ever since America was established. We are still the best thing going in a world of flawed govts. and human beings who long for freedom and a fighting chance.

That is true, and we stand behind what we do as people, although most of the politicians cannot say the same. LOL

I am a New Zealander and here is my uncensored honest opinion on Americans. Americans are just like any other group of people. There are nice people and not so nice people. Some are quiet and others loud, it all depends on the indivdual person and their personality, morals and values, background and upbringing.
However there are many generalizations about Americans that many non Americans believe. E.g Many Americans do not know much about what goes on outside their own country and think that America is invincible. Sometimes they are so patriotic they have lost the ability to have an open mind as perhaps other Western European countries do (Australia, UK ect..)
I have a few American friends who now live in New Zealand and they are really friendly, outgoing and genuine people. :-) I also agree with you many shady things occur in America but they are not your fault, or the average Americans fault.. its just those in power abusing their privilidges.. this has happened throughout history e.g Pol Pot in Cambodia, Hiter in Germany, Stalin in Russia.

Very interesting! And not too far off, as I would defintiely say that Americans really don't know (and some really don't care) what is going on in the rest of the world. America is definitely a "me" nation, meaning you have to work and earn for yourself, and very little comes to you unless you do so. People here are often times selfish, but that could be the case anywhere in the world I would imagine. Americans have to work very hard to survive though, I can tell you that for sure.

Yes, one of the good things about living in America seems to be that if you are willing to work hard that you can really achieve anything. The same goes in New Zealand. However we often take for granted here how lucky we are.. free health care, education, really cheap and subsidised university fees. It wasn't untill I started to travel that my eyes opened and I really became greatful.

You know, that is good point-it could really mean that they are jealous. We may be considered arrogant and self-absorbed, but serioudly with how much goes on here within our own "four walls" who can blame us for not having much of an idea what's going on in other places? We have so much cultural diversity and SO many people here, it's really insane! LOL

Princess, that sort of national navel gazing would be fine if your government did not have it's fingers in so many pies all over the world. Given that the government need the support of the people, (it is supposed to be a democracy after all) then the people need to understand what is going on in other parts of the world and so to be able to understand why the government is doing what it is doing.
Public ignorance of events outside of the USA, ignorance which is created by the American news media in the first place by either ignoring events or reporting events with a heavy American slant, (failure to report news in an impartial manner) gives the American public a distorted and inaccurate view of events outside of the USA which allows the government to act pretty much as it pleases outside of the USA.
There's nothing new about this though. This has been the case at least since the days of the Vietnam war in the 60's when the American government used misinformation about the threat posed by the North Vietnamese to justify the intervention into Vietnam. And again in the 2nd Gulf war when disinformation (the non - existant WMD's) was used to justify the invasion of Iraq.

there are every type of people in every part of the world. the point is whom you meet and interact with. unfortunately america has earned a negative image over the past few years. the people are generally considered arrogant and less senstive towards other cultures and societies to extent of ridiculing them. americans are also the worlds largest wasters. the manner in which america wants to impose it's ideals around the world is also questionable. america has a great enterprising community (from all around the world) but the manner in which they manage their enterprise can also be questioned. case in point- the recent sub prime scam.they have not only created problem for themselves but for all around the world. it seems that americans also don't learn a lesson from history. after the disaster in vietnam and korea, and the soviet disaster in afghanistan i don't think there was a point in repeating history.

I do agree with you that American's are wasters, and that is not the first I have heard this either. And another point you made, we don't seem to care about what else is going on in the world and that is true too. And I am not really sure why either of those statements are true.

I think that you are all crazy for not having a washing machine in your kitchen
No on a serious note i dont really think of americans as any different to the people here in the UK, just a different accent. My comment above was from a conversation with a friend from Tecas, i showed her a picture of my daughter in the kitched and she was amazed that i had a washing machine in my kitchen, and i was amazed she didnt as its the norm here .. well you get the idea

Well, that depends really on what part of the country you live really. In the warmer parts of the country, you can usually find them out in the garage. In the colder parts of the country, you can often times find them in the basemsnt. (Do you have basements in your countries?) Some homes have laundry rooms specifically made for a washer and dryer, along with having cabinets to store other cleaning supplies. I have seen washers kept in the bathroom, but not too often.

We dont have basements here unless you live in a really big "old" house, and we dont have special wash rooms either unless again you live in a really big house. I honestly thought everyone kept their washing machine in the kitchen until i had that conversation. Sorry ive deviated your discussion a little

Hello princess07031980,
I have lived in America for four years. I have met many people there and one the things I liked is that it's a country for anyone from anywhere. It doesn't matter what your religion is. They'll still let you live there if you have a green card. I will like americans no matter what people tell me. I've heard some really bad stuff but I don't believe them. Cheers!

My home country is Bulgaria. I originaly went to America because my father had to work there. I was very young and I don't remember a lot but all that I am sure of is that in my school there there were people from all over the world which I got to meet. I have also spent some time in Asia but that is a different story. Thanks for your interest in my life. Cheers!

Well as far as I am concerned I have liked America since my childhood because it is a land of opportunity. And I think that it is one country where a citizen has the right to exercise his rights without any fear. And I very much like the happy go lucky and taking it easy nature of the American people. All these ideas are fed to me through the Hollywood movies like Erin Erin Brockovich and other movies and the books I read. Now it is your turn to tell me whether my idea of America is right?

Many Americans are in fact as you say-happy go lucky people. I do consider myself born into the greatest nation in the world because my country is strong and the culture mixes define the whole cutlure as accepting so many different things. We wouldn't be America without! Well, perceptions through movies can be misleading, because we don't all live like that-but like Erin Brokovich-she fought to prove the wrongs of corporations, which is an honorable thing to do. We are a free country, but sometimes I think that is why we have so many problems as well.

Well, I'm British and I've spent some time in the USA over the years. The main things that strike me is that while the people are, well, just people like people anywhere, the culture is very inward looking, insular if one can use that word in describing a country that spans a continent.
In watching American news programs I was struck by the lack of news coverage of events outside of the USA. As far at the American media seem to be concerned, unless it's a major disaster, the rest of the world does not seem to exist.
I was also struck by the apparent need to make sure that everything was bigger and better than anywhere else and that ranges patriotic displays, (very over the top to my British point of view, to supersized meals.
The American military also seems to have got a bit of a reputation for lack of disipline when they are on service outside of the USA. Not a few of the British casualties in the 1st Gullf War where due to so called "friendly fire" when American Warthog pilots found themselves apparently unable to distinguish between British armour and Iraqui tanks. Despite being under the close control of (American) tactical controllers.

That seems to be true-we really do only hear of the worst of what is going on in other countries, other national figure fatalities or what not. I think that is because America eats itself up for it's own news purposes-there is so much going on here, there really isn't a lot of room for other bits of news from elsewhere! Although, there are world news programa that really don't have anything to do with America, unless it is public relations.

My first impression of Americans was not the best. It was a long time ago in Europe, and was incorrectly based on a minority. There happened to be a group of American tourists on the same tour as me. They were loud, and according to them knew much more than our humble guide. So, being niave, I bundled all Americane into the same category, which I learned later was incorrect. Later, in New York of all places, I was to meet some of the best, and most generous people I had met on my whole trip. My opinion changed dramatically. Nowadays, with the Internet world wide, I believe people are making the same mistake I made over forty years ago, and many have judged all Americans on one arrogant former president, who in my opinion, is NOT a typical American. Ahh, got through without mentioning his name!

Well, thank you for being honest and sharing your first impression of Americans. LOL I am sorry they tainted you from the get, but I am glad to know that you met some good ones who abolished that first thought about us. Although-there are many Americans who are rude and just as you described. If I were to first experince some citizens of another country the way you did, I would imagine it would leave a bad taste in my mouth for their country as a whole too.

Well, I have seen many people scoffing the past tense president for many things, and undoubtedly he got our country in some trouble. The lead singer of the country trio Dixie Chicks had said at one point she was ashamed that she was from the same state (Texas) as the President (Bush), which raised some HUGE controversy in the media.

I've known many foreigners from all over the world since my youth. From my experience most of them do have a low opinion of Americans. Why? My guess is that they judge us by what they see and hear in the news and various publications. Also they look to mainstream American culture (movies, TV shows, ect) and use that to judge us. And our mainstream culture has become more of a trash culture the last couple of decades. So I'm not surprised that they have a low opinion of us. I don't agree with it, but that's what I've seen happening.

Interesrting that the culture we have is referred to as a trash culture. I can see where that stems from though. I see that the last few decades America has really gotten out of control. And what exactly happened? That varies from the different views of politics, people, historical events, presidential bloops, etc. One thing that America lacks that many other countries have is the actualy care and compassion for its people. America is a fend for yourself type of nation. There are no royalties to be paid here, no free education, high poverty and such.

I agree with you Druid. But I would like to add that the trash culture that you speak of was done intentionally. The quality of our culture is not important to our elites. Profits drive everything and you are seeing the results.

Sweeping statements obviously have great political value even if they are not necessarily true. America, is often demonised as a country where people seem to delight in practising every single pervesion that may exist and even some that don't. America may not be as economically dynamic as it once was. But there are still many good things coming out of America, research and development and creativity in the arts being just some of them. Since mylot has more Americans, I have come to a better understanding of the prevailing issues that are currently being hotly debated in the real America. Don't let individuals color your perception of the entire country. They might not have breath the same American air as you and would have only heard hearsay and spurt out the same which have given a distorted picture of your real country.

I have nothing againts Americans or other nationalities. I do not categorize or see people because of their nationalities. People do not differ because of race. I have so many things to say about United States and it's Government. but for the American People, they're simply no different from any other people in the world. but before i feel intimidate when ever i see an American in our streets, it was only through Call Centers, Customer Service that i got to know some of the negative attitudes of the some Americans..on the phone.. but the real enlightenment was when i start using this site. That's then, i realized that were not so different with each other except in English Language. Some times, am thinking what would be the world like....with out them... well, if you do think of that, just remember the Dark ages, lolz.

We have the world's greatest military machine, and we are a democracy, so it is important for the establishment to keep us under control. We are kept stupid by a relentless media machine that never stops lying to us. When 70% of us thought Saddam was linked to 911, it certainly could have corrected this problem, but did not. The fact that few of us understand anything about the terror which we have spread around the world over the last 60 years is a product of the propaganda machine. Our government has committed or sponsored hundreds of 911s in East Timor, Iraq, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Chile, Iran etc. We have more genocide on our hands than Hitler. (Cambodia and East Timor to begin with) The fact is we apply a different set of rules to ourselves. No wonder we are hated. I would like us to close our 750 imperial bases and stop stealing from the world. Lets stop making excuses for our thuggery. Lets not be proud of being a bully. Lets aspire to be Athens instead of Sparta!

I had definitely not thought of America as being terrorist, but it's pretty true if you look at what we are doing to others. And you're right again-we are fed lies and have had lots of truth kept from us anyway, can you really blame us (the common people) for what we do and what really don't know? I live here, I just live-I have the right to choose sides of the politics, but I choose not to, mainly because no matter what happens in this country, I truly believe my little voice won't be heard anyway.
