I have always wondered since I was a "wee little lad" exactly how much of our lives we devote to sleeping. In fact, years upon years of our life are spent while you and I aren't even awake! A few days ago, curiosity got the best of me and I decided to find out exactly how many years we spend sleeping. -Warning Math Content- [but please read anyway] Since the average male lifespan in the U.S. is 75.6 years, I multiplied that by 24 to see how many days the average lifespan is for a man. 27,594 days. I multiplied this number by 17 because that is the average amount of hours a person will be awake during the day. 469,098 hours of being awake in ones lifetime. I divided this by 24 to get the number of days of the males life they will be awake. 19,545.75 days of being awake. Then I divided this by 365 to get the amount of years the male will be awake. 53.55 years is the average amount of time the average male will be awake in their lifetime! This means that by subtracting 53.55 ( years being awake ) from 75.6 ( average lifespan -male- ) we will find how many years of sleep are used in a lifetime. 22.05 years. Using the same method, I found that a woman with the average lifespan of 80.8 years will be asleep. 23.57 years. This means that the average person in the U.S. will only be awake for around 55 years! We aren't even there for 22 years of our life! It seems strange when you think about it. Anyway, thanks for reading and I hope you got something out of this. P.S. I hope all of my math is right, I am only 13 but I used a calculator and such so it should all be right. Just mention an error in your response if you find one. So, I hope I have inspired you to make the best of your 55 years awake as you can! Thanks again!, Madbomber

Hi , I think your calculations are quite close to what the reality would be like . However, we cannot reduce these sleep hours ;without causing our body harm (s) . We need these sleep hours to rejuvenate our body and to get it fitting for the day time again . In fact sleeping lesser causes many health problems ;called as "Sleep Disorders" . So,adequate sleep is quite necessary . Thanks for this discussion .
