How to be a good writer? Is is learning all theories of writing can make a person to be a good writer? Or, being a good writer is achieved through an experience or by an accident?

I feel a book is great when it reflects raw reality. When it is honest, shows great heart, depth, integrity, clarity and has a powerful message to deliver.
Writings reflect the writer's nature, mind and soul, and I find that they have to touch me in deep way, in order for me to carry on reading them. I like books that get to the crux of the matter quickly without beating around the bush.
A book maybe written in a technically brilliant format, but if it lacks a profound message then it's boring.
One of the best books I have read recently is something called A MILLION PIECES by James frey. The writer's focus is relaying his experience in the RAW. He pays little attention to technicalities, punctuation, vocabulary and grammar. He has totally developed his own style....ha. Infact it is so ungrammatically incorrect that it is FASCINATING, ORIGINAL and REFRESHING. It just cuts to the chase very quick and became an instant best seller...so in his case most theories have been disregarded. But English was his first language so he did have a good comfort level. If English is not a persons first language then definitely some reading and writing practice is needed.
But he point is, that one should not give too much importance to theory, and just write from the heart. It's better this way then some writers, who give too much priorty to theories and technicalities etc whilst the content of what they are portraying is just lost, shallow and uninspiring.
After reading James Frey who was not very educated at all, I believe anybody can write....just don't think too much and just get the inspiration down on the page as it comes....the rest will just follow.

You are right. I will follow your advice..practice and practice will make better...I am also learning how to be a good writer and I realize my ability in English is not really good since English is not my first language. But, I believe I can be a good writer and may be my talent will follow me by practicing a lot.

Yes indeed Rianni, you have a wonderful heart and a unique perspective on life, which I am sure many will be interested in. So definitely pursue this area. You will develop your own style.
Another good thing to do is read, read and read some more book, magazines etc, reading programmes your subconscious in the use of the English language. Thank you Rianni for a best response too...I'm feeling quite shy. best of luck my dear.

It is difficult to define who a good writer is.A good writing to some might be a bad one for some. It depends on the interest of the reader. In this age of many diversification it is difficult to make a single person a good writer for all the readers.Writing is an art as well as a science. Writing is an art since it has various styles to it and it is a science as you would use different techniques to write it to achieve the same result of satisfaction to the readers.
A writer who had won Nobel prize can be a good only to those who are real litterateurs. For a common reader the same writer can be a difficult person to understand.

Thanks for giving a comment here. I think I have a new perspective after reading your comment. It makes me realize that to be a good writer is a process and being good is relativy. The way we perceive our uniquness is a way how to be a good writer for being who we are.

I think writers are born with that talent. I have a friend who is an author and a good writer. I questioned him how he gets all his ideas when he writes a novel. What he told me was the ideas just flow naturally. Give him a word and he'll be able to create a story out of it. But the weird thing is when he writes a short story in his blog he does not have the slightest clue where the story will lead to. He will go on writing from once chapter to another on spontaneous ideas. His stories are interesting and the characters there are very alive. And you can be mesmerized by the flow of the whole story. He is gifted with this talent in writing.

i too want to learn how to write well and with clarity . i still have difficulty to do so cause i have tried to learn it how to write well quite late already in my life but still it is better than not to learn it all. i want to express my thoughts pretty clearly and with ease unlike now that i have to really have to think hrad on how i will express myself well and how will the readers be able to understand what i am saying in my post. i am learning quite slow and it is quite frustrated . i tend to forget a lot of words that i need to express or say what i am feeling or would like to say. and sometimes i end up with improper words or words that is not that appropriate for what i mean to say. but still i just hope as i keep on writing and reading that all those i have read will sink in inside my thoughts and specially in my heart so that i will not be able to forget them that easily.

One should have an inborn talent to write well. Then the knowledge on theories can add value to one's way of writing. Experience does add up in the end but one should have the passion to write.
I'm a writer by profession and this is how i write. But one of my cousin has a beautiful and creative way of writing and is not into the profession. So i believe that she is a born writer and i'm a trained writer.
Now, it all depends on the kind of writer you are :)

wow.. i was just been thinking of that today. Here's what i think.
A good writer is someone who knows what he or she is writing, in detailed attention. I can't stand reading about something written by someone who doesn't have a clue what they are writing. another important point would be the fact that a good reading material is written by an author who enjoyed the experience a lot, therefore when you read it you enjoy it too. its too obvious when a person writes something they do not like. its sounds boring to the person who reads it itself.
learning theories can make you a writer, but not a good writer. I guess some have the talent, while others have to learn this talent. And as a famous writer once told me, as you are beginning, prepare yourself to face a lot of rejection and failures, keep going and one day you'll achieve success. even J.K Rowling's harry potter books were rejected a few times, until she found a publisher at last. good luck to you.
