Our Sun Newspaper today, dated 10th Aug 2009 (Malaysia), an eminent practitioner of complimentary therapy said that Coconut Water, which is alkaline, can be used as a herbal medicine for the prevention of H1N1. In Malaysia, we can enjoy two types of coconut water.. one is our local type..bigger in size~ very refreshing!, another one is imported from Thailand called 'fragrant coconut' - small in size but sweeter and fragrant- purplish in colour! 1 coconut can cost us around RM4 - RM6 depends on where you order your drink...from the stall or from the restaurant! There are another type called 'sea coconut' it is more like a desert , sometimes as drinks too - add with honey! Do share whether you like to drink coconut water or not... is it refreshing and it brings you the feeling like you are at a beach resort!? ..If not, let us know, perhaps you can try one when you have the chance!

Dear ypyanyan, We use coconut milk to cook rice (not coconut water). This very aromatic rice is called 'Nasi Lemak' or Coconut Milk Steamed Rice! The Nasi Lemak, that is rice cooked in coconut milk and flavoured with cloves and pandan leaves, is an all time favourourite. It usually topped with chilli sambal (hot and spicy gravy) and fried ikan bilis (anchovies), sliced hard - boiled eggs, and cucumber. You can also add in some peanuts if desire. Nasi Lemak is very famous for breakfast, lunch or even supper. A "must-try" food if your are a foreigner. you will like it!! How to make Nasi Lemak and sambal ikan bilis I ) Nasi Lemak Ingredients: 1 cup rice 3 screwpine leaves salt to taste 1 grated coconut Method 1. Clean the rice and drain 2. Squeeze out 2 cups of thick coconut milk with screwpine leaves. Add in salt. 3. If you desire, you can also add in some sliced shallots and ginger. 4. Serve this rice with sliced hard-boiled eggs, cucumber and sambal ikan bilis. One day if you come to Malaysia, I can bring you to try this delicious 'nasi lemak' Thanks and happy myLotting :)

It is indeed a refreshing drink, I like it so much.Yes, it is good to take coconut drink when we have fever. It is believed can remove the heat from the body and get the body cooler. We also drink coconut water when we have chicken box, but I don't know why we need to do this. I also know nothing about the coconut water could have neutralise the medication. Hope Iriene can have some explanation here.

Dear vingyan, Tks for sharing... Coconut water are alkaline, this will neutralise acid in our body. Thus build the body immune system stronger, that's why hopefully it can prevent H1N1 due to stronger body immune system. It is not a CURE. Regarding the neutralise effect on medication..not so sure, may be coconut water is an alkaline..therefore will netralise acid (if medication acidic type...must check with my neighbour - he is a doctor...hahaha, will keep you inform once I got the answer

Hi there! Given the choice, I would prefer to have Coconut water over in other soft drink. I love the taste of coconut water and whenever I get the apportunity, I take it, I find it most refreshing and affective for our digestive system. Though I stay in land locked city and coconut trees do not grow at my place, yet we receive its supply from other cities and whenever I go to coastal cities, I enjoy myself with coconut water.

Dear dpk, Me toooo I just had a bowl of fresh coconut water..it is so refreshing, my mind are awake and I am full of ideas to response & comments at myLot..lol You have made a wise choice, you prefer coconut water than other drinks. Good decision, keep it up! Coconut water is natural, it is healthy for our body and reasonably priced. Drinking cola, gassy / frizzy drinks and other sweetened drinks are not healthy in the long run. We should watch what we eat and what we drink. I truly agree with you, drinking coconut water help our digestive system. I heard some myLotters also mentioned that coconut water are good for treatment of Urinary Tract Inflammation (UTI). Btw, how much does a whole coconut drink cost you in your city? I managed to find a reasonable priced coconut water seller stall, I bought it for RM2.50 per shole coconut....I am so HAPPY! Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed reading your response..

I like to drink coconut water and I like to eat its flesh too. I totally agree with you that buying the same coconut from different place will get the different price. Hence I seldom order coconut juice from restaurant. I will normally buy from super market. It only costs about only RM2 for a Thai coconut which is also called fragrant coconut. I like sea coconut too. I normally homemade honey sea coconut drink. It is super nice when it serves cold. Our country is hot, so it it good to take refreshing drink like coconut.

Hi again, I think I bought the coconuts from Carefour , Mid Valley. it is cheap but of course it is fresh too. Forgot to tell you that during my trimester of pregnancy I drank quite a lot of coconut waters . As some one tell me, I think more than 1 person, drink coconuts waters is good for easy delivering and the baby is actually feeling very heaty in mummy womb. Hence the refreshing coconut waters can remove the heat for the baby. Of course don't over drink. Believe it or not, both my pregnancy is so smooth and my 2 babies came out easily and I didn't suffer very much during my natural delivering. You stay well and have a nice day.

OH, in my household, coconut water is like a 'must' as my mum will buy almost everyday for us to drink... all thanks to the stall that near our house selling RM2 for each one big coconut, and the lady can even help us to open it! 1 big coconut can have about 2 to 3 packets of water, and my mum will bring it back for us... I lie the flesh in the coconut water.. and remember the song C-O-C-O-N-U-T? hahaha... and as for sea coconut, I will boil it once a month with other stuff and drink it..

Dear cwong77, You are so blessed with coconut drink everyday. It is so cheap to get 1 whole big coconut for only RM2.00...where to buy ..huh?? I am glad you are having healthy drinks everyday...keep it up! When you mentioned about the children song 'C-O-C-O-N-U-T' it really make me laugh. When my son are small / much younger, I used to put the audio tape inside my car cassette player. So we will on it whenever we are driving. The song it quite catchy and lively too! So, one fine day, my elder sister borrowed my car to work..she do not know how to off the cassette player, and the songs keep repeating..and COCONUT song ~ again & again, she said it makes her go crazy...... Tks and all the best!

Hello Iriene88,Another great discussion!!! I really enjoying your thoughts in your discussion topics. Coconut water is so refreshing and as with a hot climate like ours, its a natural gift. These are sold at the roadside. There may be sometimes where we cannot stop by the side to have it. But the hot sun will some how make us to drink it. We have coconut trees in our home and we usually get it from that very often. Its good for health too, not only refreshing. In our language they say, "Its better to have a coconut tree than to have a son like you"Have a nice day... Cheers

Dear Philip, Great to know that you enjoy the discussions. Yes, coconut is a natural gift, a fruit from an amazing tree! You are so lucky having coconut trees at your home. Hahaha, I understand why angry parents will scold their not obedient and useless son with that sentence...because every part of the coconut tree is useful.. 1) coconut flesh can be eaten, coconut water are drinkable 2) coconut leaves can make decorations for festival, the centre of the leaves can make broom, the trunk can be use as bridge 3) coconut milk can be cook, coconut oil etc..amazing! Tks for sharing..all the best & do keep in touch!

Hi, I am so happy to see you here, truly appreciate it The Thai fragrant coconut is the smaller one which normally wrapped with thin layer of plastic - sell in seafood restaurant. Tastier, sweeter and more fragrant. If you have the chance to go to Thailand, Pattaya make sure you try it there, the place where they 'smoke' it...fresh and 'unforgettable taste'! Thanks for sharing and do keep in touch!

Dear mikeysmom, Coconut is a fruit from tall palm trees that usually grow near the beaches, islands like Kerala (India), Hainan Island (China), the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Africa and many more... What I know was coconut water are alkaline..our body when having excessive exercise, stress, more meat diet will end up acidic which in turn make our immune system weak / low. So by drinking coconut water (alkaline) it will neutralise the acid in our body, thus will give a boost to our immune system..a strong body immune system will prevent H1N1.... It is not a CURE, but more of a preventive measures... From what I read on other myLotters responses..coconut water is also good for cooling our body (get rid of body heatiness), thus it is suitable for measles and chicken pox. Some of them said it helps during the third semester (trimester) of pregnancy ~ make normal delivery easy BUT do not drink too much - too cooling! Tks and hope to hear from you on my other topics too! Take care!

Thanks for your information about the nutrition of coconuts. I like to drink coconut water very much. It started from a trip to Hainan Island several years ago, where we drank directly from the coconuts. Back home, every time I see coconut in the street, I will buy one. But for most cases, I drank only the alternatives, such as tinned coconut water, or even the powder.

Hello Iriene, I travel a lot as my sales job requires me to be on the move most of the time. Each time as I pass by a stall selling coconuts, I stop by to have one. The hawker usually ask with ice and syrup? I said "Original or kosong." He will then slide off the top and bottom making it flat for the top to act as base. Then he flips over to cut off the bottom until the water is exposed and hand to me with a drinking straw and long metal spoon for me to enjoy. The long metallic spoon is for me to scoop up the flesh. Umph, what sweet refreshing drink to savour! At times while on the way home, I stop by to have one coconut for myself there and then and order another two for take-away.

I like coconut water, fresh from the coconuts. When I visited Hainan Island, I drank a lot of such water, so that I got addicted to it. Back home, for quite a long time, I bought the tinned coconut water or grounded powder, but the taste was different. The price has grown up these years, from RMB 2 to about 5, still whenever I see it sold on street, I would buy and review the memory of my visit to the beautiful island.

I don't think so coconut water can't cure H1N1 but it is a remedy for UTI. Even some herbal companies claimed that virgin coconut oil is cure for H1NI but Department of Health here in the Philippines warned them that there's no scientific basis to proved it. They also warned the public that it is not the cure but it only helps to boost the immune system. We are blessed because coconuts here are abundant and it has many uses all of the parts is useful. It is called a tree of life and we also used it in cooking. I also like coconut, my favorite is when we make it into salad we called it here buko salad yummy. We also have many varieties of coconut here one of the rare variety is macapuno.

Dear agv0419, Coconut water is not the cure for H1N1 but more for boosting our immune system to prevent it...you are absolutely CORRECT! Coconut water are alkaline, if our body are acidic..our immune system will be weak..therefore drink coconut water to neutralise the acid in our body in order to strengthen our immune system.. Does this rare variety called macapuno taste better than the rest? Is it sweeter like the 'fragrant coconut' from Thailand? It is good that you even enjoyed buko salad. Btw..how you called coconut in Tagalog? So...the next time when I visit the Philippines, I can order coconut drink... Tks for sharing & hope to hear your views on my other topics. You can always get it at any restaurants or stalls.... If you come to Malaysia - PJ / Kuala Lumpur then I can bring you try some. I totally agree with you! Among all the drinks in the world, coconut water is by far the most refreshing. It's great if it's chilled, it's great in its natural state, it's great any way you try it! YOu can have your fancy drinks and your elaborate creations! Some drinks look good, others make you feel good; some can cost you the earth, others make you wonder why you bothered. But coconut water is cheap (free in many places), can easily be made to look fancy, makes you feel refreshed and make you wonder why you bother with any other drink! Three cheers for the unassuming and yet unique coconut water!
