I've had a lot on my mind lately about jobs, the economy, opportunity, charity, and so forth, as many Americans and people worldwide have had. My question is this:
You are a technical professional! A nurse, a teacher, an electrician.. whatever. You've been laid off for over a year, and your unemployment compensation has ended. There are no jobs in your area, and moving is NOT an option.
McDonald's is the only place in your town hiring. It's a hot job, it's a low paying job, and we all know it sucks.
My question is, would you apply for this job?
Why or why not?

C'mon! This is the only place that is hiring and moving is not an opinion, right? The answer "yes" should have been a no-brainer. I would take the job without the thought of all the negative attributes. I would feel blessed to have been favored to be allowed to find employment so that I could take care of myself and/or my family. I think we have gone beyond logical thinking and let pride get in our way. I have heard it said that, "a man with too much pride is a fool in his on way." Working at a low paying job, when you have a college education can be frustrating but just knowing that it is temporary should give you hope in knowing that the compromise could be short-lived. Think about this if you think you should not compromise your pride, homeless or survival.

I agree.... I just started this discussion because of my frustration with the local workforce. Someone I know is homeless and three of the four fast food places here are hiring, but he won't apply. I also know someone who's accustomed to making $70k+ a year who won't apply either because she feels that she is "better than that". It makes me sad, because I want to work and can't due to physical limitations. Not the oh my aching feet kind, the oh I could die being exposed to this environment/chemical kind.
On an interesting note, when I worked with Lowe's I realized that after talking with some college educated coworkers (one had a BA in elementary education and the other a licensed realtor), they told me that they were actually making more money mixing paint at Lowe's and selling appliances.

I would take the job. But of course I am one of those kinds of people that will do what it takes to survive! I have had to collect cans along the side of the road, clean toilets, and sell my house hold stuff to provide for my daughter and myself. I find it amazing that people, in these economic times, can still be so fussy about the jobs they are offered!
A high school acquaintance of mine took 20 years to get through college with a BS degree (he went full time too...his mom paid for everything. She worked as a housekeeper at one of the hospitals to make the money to pay his way through) And he refuses to take a job outside of his chosen field. He hasn't held a job in 20 years!

hi zoey no let your profession help you if you are a nurse
go to a nurses registry and work temp all over the county you might not make as much but it will pay better than burger king, also if you are a teacher look for other jobs that could use a teachers abilities, same as electrician, also hit the temp agencies a lot of times a temp job can become a permanent job also work as a tutor for teaching one on one and work as a temp teaching electronics. becaome a consultant for electricity or nursing or whatever. make a job If you can drive use that ability almost all cab companies still have openings, all hospitals are forever low on staff dont give up and go to burger king just yet, use imagination

1. Not every area has temp agencies... Where I live, you have to drive at least 35 miles to find just ONE temporary agency, and their jobs do not service ALL areas. Also, even temp agencies have work and educational requirements - even tough sometimes they are absolutely stupid and unrelated.
2. I said moving wasn't an option, the original post was about accepting work that you wouldn't accept if there were qualified positions in the area.
3. Just because you are a member of a union, does NOT guarantee that jobs are available.
4. All hospitals are NOT forever low on staff.
5. I think you missed the entire meaning of the post.

Yes, I probably would unless welfare would pay more. It is now a matter of the mostest to pay bills. I have worked many jobs that I have not been trained for and jobs that were hard to do and not the most desirous. I have come away being blessed every time. It really, though, depended on my attitude. It is a tough place to be to be out of unemployment but it is not a place that can not be recovered from eventually. In the meantime, I would continue to look for a better opportunity.

Yes, I would apply for this job because it would be my only option. A low paying job is better than no job at all. However, I'm getting SSI and it might affect my SSI check. My lawyer has advised me not to work for this reason. I've worked in fast food and I know what you mean about it being a hot job and low paying. I quit because they didn't give me enough hours. If I were in need, I would be glad to have any job. Kathy.

I'm in a similar boat. I have some slightly unique physical and environmental limitations. As a result, most employers will not hire me, but my doctor won't push for me to get SSI. I have to be in a stable environment.. With a stable temperature and stable level of moisture regardless of what time of the year it is... Dust and relatively chemical free.. free of perfumes, free of handling red dyes... free of aerosol usage. My body temperature has to maintain.. if it goes up a little bit or if I sweat, cry, get a runny nose.. I easily end up in the emergency room. There are also many foods that I cannot handle or be exposed to. So that leaves me pretty limited in the types of jobs I can accept (and why I spend so much time on here lol)

Personally I feel unless you are in the shape to commute to work, and want to keep your job skills recent, I would say that taking this job at McDonalds could be the Best thing to do for sure. Even though it might not pay the best, and may not be the Best of jobs to work at, it is better than nothing for sure. I know from experience that working Fast Food is hard work, and most of them are way under appreciated for all the hard work they do, and underpaid. But in todays society sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do just to help make ends meet for sure.

There is not question about whether or not I'd actually apply for it. If I was really desparate for some type of job, anything that actually paid me, I would apply for it. If I truly needed it and needed the money, why wouldn't I apply for the job? That's foolish. It may not be the best job, it may not really pay me much of anything, but it's money and I'd need it.

well im not a professional thats for sure, ive had my share of office jobs but nothing that could be considered a professional career.
Ive been looking for work for 7 months now..for some unknown reason our town wasnt on the stupid list of "towns with the worst unemployment rate" that i saw the other day..and we are riding a whopping 19.1% unemployment rate!!
I really, REALLY did not want to apply for fast food..ANY fast food. ive worked it when i was younger and its got to be the single worst job to have..with the exception of shoveling sh*t for free. (LOL)
but i did apply. mcD's, subway, jack in the box, burger king, taco bell!! nobody is hiring. nobody..ive put in at walmart, target, pet stores, the 2 local temp agencies, a friggin mini golf course thingy that is already looking like its going to go out of business and it only opened 3 months ago. etc etc etc.
the only money im able to earn is online right now. and its certainly not enough.
im lucky that i dont have kids to feed, but i do have to take care of my grandmother, food, bills etc.
so...to say the least. you bet i would compromise! ESPECIALLY if i had kids! there would be no hesitation whatsoever if i had children to feed and clothe too!

19%!!! Omigosh that's insane.. sounds almost like where I had lived in michigan. I'd actually have to look to see what the unemployment rate is in the town that I live in right now. It's not even so much that there's not jobs, there are jobs popping up once in a while.. However, being a small town they tend to go to Joe's brother cause Joe's friends with the manager or Jill's daughter, because the store owner is Jill's grandmother, and even worse the stupidest ever: We wont hire you if you're dating someone who has family working here or if you have family that is working here, or if you have a second job that we might have to schedule around. People sometimes come up with the lamest excuses to get out of hiring perfectly good workers.
NO ONE who is willing to work and meets the requirements if the job is "over qualified" for a job either, as many tend to try to pull.

Hi there!
Though it is a hypothetical situation, yet I would say that if I happen to face this kind of situation, I would compromise because for me 'survival' is important rather than anything else.

Oh gosh, if it really was the last resort and I had no other option and things were really tight, then yes I would, but I would desperately keep looking for something else, and hope to God that the people already working there helped cushion the blow.

Hello zoey7879! I am in the government and I know that I have the stable job. In this time of crisis, I have many extra jobs, like earning on line here in myLot, accepting computer jobs and ventures in buy and sell business (I have my Boutique). My response to your discussion is that if ever I have no job, I will compromise and work even though the wage is lower as long as I won't step on other people's foot and the job is decent.

Yes, I would apply for this job right away. I would rather have a low paying job rather than not getting payed at all. The income could do until I got another job. People may look down at these kinds of jobs, but I for one do not, as I'd do all I have to do to maintain an income.
