Are people inherently good or bad?

I want to know how people feel about this. Are people born innately good, bad, or neutral? This is kind of a nature vs. nurture debate. I argue that people are born neutral and have the capacity to become either extremely kind or horribly destructive. Everyday I feel more and more that we have a greater capacity for destruction than kindness and "goodness."

I see the laws of duality to be human myths. There are just too many different view points for a universal idea of two distinctly different entities: good and evil. I do feel that labels are useless and defining someone, especially from the newborn stage, is rather odd. But I do feel that babies have there own views before they are slightly altered by what they are taught by their parents and respected elders. When I was a newborn, I cried when specific people tried to hold me and no one influenced me to do so. I just had my own reasons that I definietly don't know why now.

hi faridii hatley here. I always thought that God made us
in his own image so we must be born good, and later
we can either go with the good side or give in to the
temptaions out there to be bad. I do feel every little
baby is born with only good, but bad is learned later.
we are all given choices and we have to decide either
'the good choices or the bad choices.we are born inherently
good.

I agree with this viewpoint. I to think babies are born good.

I'd have to disagree with you. Well most babies you'll find are smiling and have a goodness, innocense about them of course. I think if they were born neutral then they'd like have little emotion showing. I do think that environment and how they are nurtured and loved from the beginning has a great impact on how good, or bad, they turn out. Like I would think babies that are shown no love and have sad environmental surroundings might turn out bad. All that negativity couldn't be good. Many people I observe when I'm out and about seem to be neutral - at least toward one another as strangers. I wish it wasn't this way. It's like if aliens invaded (inhabited) our fellow humans we wouldn't be able to tell the difference. People act like such zombies. It's a sad state of affairs. But over all I still think there's lots of good in people although they basically just show it to their friends and family. Overall I don't agree with you.

Well, I was born to be good and to be bad.=p I grew up in society that showed me a lot of goodness, being kind and loving to others but I also exposed to bad things. I saw people not kind to others, rude, and etc. I think we are born to be neutral to see what is morally right and morally wrong, right? In this way we can balance things and become a better person.

well you would think so because so many people who had bad parents turn out to be bad. but thats so not true you know. my dad had a tumor so thats what made him so angry all the time. and i'm not really like him, i don't get upset as easy. and my mommy always tell me that there comes a point in life that you have to grow up her friend had alot of bad things happen to her they grew up in the same neighbor hood but she says that you have to finally stand up and stop blaming everyone on those few bad things you have to get over it. and so that makes me think if your bad you can be good if you really wanted to be.

I definitely think that people are born inherently good! After being born it's then down to all the nurturing received during childhood and the teenage years! Unfortunately a person becomes bad as they choose to do so! Let me make a slight correction! There's a lot of talk about broken families and poverty and I think that relates to this issue as well. While I do have hopes for humanity and am going to become a teacher in hopes of helping the children become a better future, I have to say I think most humans are inherently bad. I mean to say, I think we're born bad and everyday it's a choice to be bad or to change and do good. Think about it. Look at how many people are in jail versus say how many people have degrees from a college. Not saying going to college makes you a good person, but it was a choice to say study or do a crime and most people, number wise, choose to do a crime. Also, mnay laws and even jobs are set up in way that the person who does things that aren't moral get ahead. We are taught good people share for example, but to survive, you must be greedy and hoard things. Not a good thing to do. Many good people end up not getting a head in life. I think it's both humans are born to favor bad behavior and our society rewards bad behavior.
