I am sure most students and working men and women would agree to this. I [am a homemaker] still would find this disappointing. My office going son would be unnecessarily missing out on a legitimate holiday. Well, of course what can we do? How do you react? Do you get thrilled when a Government holiday occurs during the middle of the week? This time August15th [Indian Independence Day] falls on a Saturday and this triggered this discussion topic. Please do share your thoughts on the subject.

This holiday on a saturday is a disappointment.....I would have been happier if the holiday had come on a monday .... saturday is a less stessful day in the office and I am able to complete a lot of my weeks pending work .... having a holiday on that day will make the following week more tiring for me.

Hi Kala! It appears a very interesting topic and most of us who are in 'service' either in private sector or in Govt. sector, would like to have an extra holiday. However, if a holiday happens to fall either on Saturday or Sunday, we have very little option to change it, except one holiday i.e. 'Eid' (which is celebrated as per the visibility of the Moon). We cannot change our Independence day, just because it is falling on Saturday and we are being deprived of one extra holiday.........LOL! We need to take all these things in our stride. In a way it is good because 'more working days' means 'more work' and 'more productivity'.

Of course Deepak, we would naturally take things in our stride and I am also not a person who goes on wailing about such things.But there would be a tiny 'ooo why should this have fallen on a Saturday' sort of feeling in a corner of my mind.To me personally, all this makes no difference now.On the other hand when in school, we would look forward to an extra holiday.Your children would definitely say that Iam sure.THanks for the particpation and giving an excellent response.

Hi Kala! I can understand your point of view and we too wish that we should get one extra Gazetted holiday, there are 17 Gazetted holidays in a year and all of them do not fall on working days. Next year, 7 are falling on Saturdays/Sundays, so we will get only 10 Gazetted holidays. Yes, you are write children will always wish an extra Gazetted holiday...........LOL!

I am sure that schonol going students ,college students ,the working ladies,office going men would love to have the national holidays and feast days during the week days and not during the week ends because it would mean less holidays .The best day would be a Friday because then they can have a long week end and they can plan a trip to the resorts ot to other places for a visit or even to their relations houses .Though I am a home maker I also like the festivals to fall on the week days so that I can go out with my husband one more day .I am sure young parents would love to take their kids out one more day during the week .It will certainly be a disappointment to all the students and office goers if the public holidays fall on sundays.

In Australia we only have a couple that may fall on a weekend, that is Australia Day January 26 and Anzac Day April 25 if I recall correctly; if any of the other public holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday we are entitled to have the Monday off.

You are certainly entitled to have a Monday off because there is nothing like a twoday weekend holiday[to charge yourself for the next week].And if the office gives this it is an additional boon.THanks Paula for particpating in the discussion and sharing your ideas.

Hello friend, I am a fresh engineering graduate and would start working from next month only. Still, I have seen my father and brother working for a long time and i do feel a bit sad for them when something like this happens.However, this is all part of the game because sometimes a holiday would be there on Friday and then they get three days off in a row.

Not particularly.. MANY jobs here in the United States still have to work despite the fact that it is a government holiday. Often times, if the holiday falls on the weekend, many businesses or agencies will close the Friday before or the Monday just after the holiday..... I find THAT disappointing.

Oh it is different here, but in private concerns what you say happens here too rarely.Only if it is a very popular festival like Diwali/Christmas or Ganesh Chathurthi, then people do not go out thta day to work.Thanks for sharing your viewpoint and telling me what happens there.

hello kalav56, Indeed if any holiday will fall on Saturdays and Sundays I will be disappointed for it will be much okey and better if it will fall during weekdays so I can have a longer rest. This way, I can spend more time with my family. More quality time means more fun and memories. Time flies, so enjoy while they are still kids for if they are already teens they have their own world.

Absolutely right and I wholeheartedly share your idea that children take priority over anything else.When they become adults then their world includes so many things and we should make the most of what is there when it is there..And why would anyone want to miss on a legitimate holiday? THank you for sharing your thoughts on the subject.

I have never felt this disappointment. It is because I took up self employment very early of my career.In fact I don't need holidays at all. All the seven days are almost the same for me. Of course Sunday is a day I relax a little.
@kalav56 (11464)

Once you take up self-employment there is no holiday whatsoever. If some customer/client wants to meet you then you would make yourself available on a Sunday. This is more so till you establish yourself.

Hi dear, How are you? It will definitely feel some disappointments initially. But every year there must be some holidays on Sundays (Saturdays are working day for me). But no thrilling in the middle holidays and I think if it fall on Saturday then I will get two holidays together. This week, on Friday here holiday on account of Janmashtami and Saturday Independence Day then a Sunday so there is three holidays are there. The sad part is after three days holiday I will be busy with work in office, and no time for mylot (lol)

Of course, I am disappointed. Not for my sake, but for my children's sake. My business is such that, I can take an holiday any day I like and most of the times, I will be working even on a Sunday, so a Government Holiday on a weekday or a weekend makes very little difference to me. But my children would sure be disappointed, as is the case with most children. But spare a thought for those who have to work on a sunday, i.e, some Bank branches work on a Sunday, some BPO employees work on a Sunday, for them, a Govt holiday on a Sunday is a Bonus. So, it is a double edged sword. Some one's loss is someone's gain.

True.If children miss their holiday it is sad and we would naturally feel for them.People working on a Sunday, however is a minority[relatively speaking] isn't it? THanks a lot for sharing and am sorry for the late comment.

ofcourse yes. we find it disappointing when holiday merges with sundays or saturdays. We do not have five day week. Only second and fourth saturdays are holidays so this time we are happy as 15 th Aug coming as third saturday.

though it was triggered for independence day,i still find it worth a reply today as tomorrow ganesh chaturthi is falling on sunday..it really sucks to see such alignments. when a festival falls in middle of week,celebrations start from the moment u realise it..the excitement adds to happiness

This is only my personal opinion and only for what it's worth, but I believe that if the Holiday falls on a Saturday, then a Friday should be given off & if the holiday falls on a Sunday, well it should be a Monday. I think this would be a fair solution to Holiday on the weekend issue. I have worked for companies that have done it this way and it works out great but unfortunately these companies are few and far between.

I am the one who is more didappointed than my daughter if any of the public holdays happen to fall on week ends.I drive her to school every morning and picks her up after the school.Though it is not a big deal for me I like the days without that responsibility constantly blinking in my mind.
@kalav56 (11464)

Naturally.That is a definite responsibility and for which the time you leave home is very crucial.So, it would mean relaxation from usual rigour for a day if it is on weekday.THanks for dropping by .

If your children have a holiday on Thursday, then Saturday must be a working day.So, if Independence day holiday falls ona Saturday it is all the better for you Riya.Enjoy your weekend at your parents' place then., this week.
11 Aug 09
Hi Kalav56, Well if the hoilday falls on the weekend, they should have the day off on Friday so you'll have a long weekend, thats what they do over here, so the goverment should change the rules to suit the workers, don't you think? Tamara

Of course I will feel very upset with the management. It means we will lose one day off. It happens here too. but we can not do anything to change it, can we? So just accept it and try double enjoy it. It's a kind of bonus to us. happy mylotting.

It is natural that each one of us is thrilled when we receive an extra holiday in a week apart from saturdays and sundays but it is unfortunate that we indians celebrate our independence day as a holiday not as a day on which we make some strong committments for our nation.Independence day doesn't means that we are free from doing work but I think we should decide to do as much work as we can for our nation, on this day.This not only is for 15th Aug or 26th Jan but Indian govt. should also reduce the number of holidays in a year.And lets celebrate our independence day with joy rather than mourning over the fact that it has taken one day of day...thanks.
