There are many ways of establishing communication. Animal may not understan our actual words, but they can listen to our tone and body language and they smell a lot of things we are not aware of producing. They don`t only smell our fear, but also anger or love.

I think they understand part of the words we are saying. But I think what they understand is the feelings on what we are saying. For example, the stress, the pitch and the volume. Probably if we shout at them, they think we are mad though we are saying good things.

Yes and no. They speak in a different language than us, so when we speak it's much like how we would interpret someone speaking in a foreign language. We can probably learn individual words over time. Through a lot of reinforcement, they can learn to associate a word with an action. If someone is speaking in a foreign language I don't know, I won't be able to understand their words. But I can get an idea of their emotions. Animals can pick up things from what we say other than specific words. They have a lot to gain in understanding us, so it stands to reason they may have more than a passing interest in trying to understand us. They have much more acute senses than we have, so they have more to work with than we do. So with more focus on understanding as well as more tools at their disposal, I think they can pick up on a lot without actually understanding the words.

I think they do understand. That's why dogs could be taught to sit. When I visit my aunt's dogs, they know to sit down when I put my finger to my lips because my aunt does it often and then offer them a treat. Animals are smart, they just communicate differently.

I suppose they must associate certain words/sounds with particular actions and I would guess that the tone of voice makes a difference too. Animals which are domesticated learn to respond to their names and commands like 'sit'; 'stay' etc dont they tho' I suppose that's also from non-verbal clues. I think they can pick up on your moods once they've been around you for a bit.
