Cats are very different from dogs. You don't really need a particular breed. Cats are wonderful in any space they get food, water, litter box and love. Do you have a place for a litter box? Do you have enough money to provide food and fresh litter? Do you have time to spend cuddling with your cat?
Go to your local shelter and see which cat grabs hold of your heart. That will be the perfect cat for you. Let us know what your new cat looks like and what you name him or her. Be sure to have your cat spayed or neutered and don't let the cat outside into the dangers of the world.

I would add that you need to commit to getting your cat spayed or neutered to insure good quiet behavior and "good citizenship." Unneutered males will spray uring to mark the area, and unspayed females will make a racket when in heat, not to mention the possibility of unwanted kittens.
It costs money, but it is important for many reasons. The same is true for regular vet care and good quality cat food.

it depends on how much interaction you can give the cat. If you aren't going to be able to entertain the cat, I would suggest a Persian might be the best companion, you do have to keep up with the grooming, but they are not NORMALLY as active a cat as, say, a Siamese or a Bengal or a Savannah. since its a small apartment, you would also be pretty smart to not get a larger breed like a Mainecoon or a Savannah.
However, what I always tell people is go to find and rescue a cat from a shelter, regardless of the breed. if you get an adult cat, they can probably tell you if the cat is extremely active or not.
good luck

any cat, as long as you treat it well and provide a cat with all it needs, it will cause you no problems. I have 3 huge wild cats in my little appartment, they don'y cause any problems whatsoever. they tried scratching furniture at first, but i got them other things to scratch and asked them niot to scratch my furniture, they don't do it anymore. the only problem is that two of them are very fluffy, so cat's hair is everywhere... i have to learn how to make blankets out of it lol then at least i'll have some use for all the fur.

Cats are the best pets for apartments and the good news for you is that almost any breed will work for you. There are some breeds that are large though, such as a MaineCoon, that you may want to steer clear of since your place is small. Also, stay away from any breeds that are still considered "part wild", including Bengals and Savannahs. In many areas, these breeds are not permissible. You can see all the various breeds of cats by checking out the Cat Fancier's Association's list at www.cfa.org/breeds.html. However, I also strongly suggest checking out local animal shelters and rescue groups. There are always tons of wonderful kitties looking for a new, loving home. If you are located in the United States, a great place to check is www.petfinder.org or www.adoptapet.org. Best of luck on finding a furry feline friend for your home!:)

All cats are pretty quiet and clean so any cat would be good for an apartment. Maybe you can check out your local animal shelter. There's lots of adorable kitties that needs a home.
