Jobseekers allowance

I would specifically like answers from people who have claimed within the past year please. (I'm in England too).
Does anyone know how long it takes for a claim for Jobseekers Allowance to be processed?
I've submitted an online application, I think I did it about a month ago, I've heard nothing from them since then. Am I supposed to go to the job centre to sort it out or do they contact me?
I've been on their website and it's as much use as gloves to a fish.
Thank you.

I know that all paperwork is taking a long time. I guess that with so many people having been made redundant are claiming job seekers allowance. When they have processed your claim they will back date it. The worry is they might not have received your application unless they have sent you correspondence to say they have got and are now processing your application. Good luck.

They are supposed to back-date it, but that hasn't been happening with a lot of people. They just deny that they ever received the application in the first place! That's why it's so important to keep trying.

My daughter started a claim this year, and it took over 3 months to sort out. I would phone up, they are usually very helpful on the phone, but it still doesn't mean anything will happen! They would normally arrange an interview at the Jobcentre. Most importantly don't give up, even if it takes ages!

First thing you did wrong was apply online, if you went in person it would probably be sorted by now or at least you'd know who to contact to track the progress. It can take up to 6 months depending on circumstances and if the information was sent to the right people in the first place or if it's been sent all over the place.
I've had to claim Jobseekers 3 times, luckily you're in an area which is extremely good (I know it's still rather useless, but it's the best Jobcentre I've used.)
If you go to the Jobcentre they should have a record of you though, so you should be able to find out if the online application got anywhere.
They SHOULD contact you, but they aren't known for their communication skills, also as there are loads more people unemployed now, they have more work to do and things could take even longer.

It takes as long as they feel like taking. Can be up to 3 months before they contact you. They should get in touch with you but if you're worried about it, contact them and check on where your application is. If you nag them enough, they usually get things done a bit quicker. Whatever you do though, the best number to call is the DWP (I think) in Walsall because they are the ones who are the least stupid. Don't bother with the Jobcentre itsetlf until you absolutely have to because you won't get anywhere. Which website did you use? Because you should at least be able to find contact info at the DirectGov website.

They should backdate it from the date you claimed. As you claimed online, you have proof of the date of claim so they have no excuse not to backdate it.

Personally i would go into the jobcentre or give them a call to make sure that your claim went through properly as i wouldnt of thought it would take a month, you should of at least had a letter from them by now. Processing claims may be taking longer at the moment though because so many people are losing their jobs and trying to claim.
Hope you can get something sorted out

My last claim was about 3 years ago and it took them about 6 weeks to sort it out. I think you would be better to go to the jobcentre because they are probably so busy that they leaave the online applications hoping these people will give up trying to claim.

Was on it about two years ago. Am a bit vague but remember phoning up and was told of an appointment time to go to local centre the following week, and think my allowance started from when I made the phonecall.
