Most indie films are done by film makers who think their first films are very personal. That's why I think even if these films are not comparable to the quality of mainstream movies, they are more genuine works of art.

I wouldn't necessarily say that indie films are better, it's more that they often are not so stereotypical of the Hollywood crowd pleasers. They tend to explore storylines which main stream movies tend to steer clear off because the producers off big movies are in it purely to make big bucks.
In a similar manner I have found that foreign movies are often far more interesting for the exact same reasons. They are willing to explore storylines which main stream productions stay clear off.

It depends on many factors. The first is the subject and the production house of the movie. The cast and crew also play an important role. For example movies of Mani Rathnam, such as Roja(1992), Yuva(2004), Bombay(1995) etc are all mainstream movies. And so are movies by Madhur Bhandarkar. But they all exhibit a sense of creativity and help us read the ture colors of life. True that most of the big production houses mostly produce box office oriented movies with loads of romance songs and item numbers, but there is a small percentage of movies that are indeed very good. A good example is 'A wednesday'(2008) a film in association with UTV international.
Regarding your assumption that freelancer movies are always better, I would agree to it only to a certain extent. There is a reason why it is better. Because freelance movie makers have put in their 100% into making the move. They are very much involved in the plot. A good example is a documentary "smiling Pinky". While big houses scarcely take the film that seriously. As they generally have more then one film running simulteneously. Also reality is something that lacks in those big house films.
