I have heard that we are indeed triune beings; body, soul and spirit. I had not heard it said this way that they each "contact" a particular world. It does seem to make sense though!

Using the right organ is essential even in contacting the material world. We use our eyes to see and ears to hear and not the other way around.
If we try to use our body to see, hear, smell, taste, and touch God or our soul to think and feel God, we would not be able to contact Him because He is in another realm, the spiritual realm.
That is why this truth is so crucial, or else people would be groping for reality not knowing what organ to use to contact God.

There are two schools here:
Dichotomy teaches that man is of two parts: body and soul. (soul = spirit)
Trichotomy teaches that man is of three parts: body, soul, and spirit.
Some Bible verses that may be helpful to show the distinction of soul and spirit.
Gen. 2:7, God formed man of the dust (body) of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath (spirit) of life, and man became a living soul.
Thes. 5:23, spirit and soul and body
Heb. 4:12, dividing of soul and spirit
1 Cor. 2:11-16, the soulish man and the spiritual man
1 Cor. 15:44, the soulish body and the spiritual body
