A new use for Wasp spray!!

I have a friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area who was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. You could also keep it in your car and it would not be illegal. Thought this was interesting and might be of use... Watch a video about it here: http://abclocal.go.com/wtvg/story?section=news/local&id=6650350 (NOT A REFERAL.FOR DISCUSSION PURPOSES ONLY) I do hope the link works and this is of help for women out there. i did tell my friend tho that i would be afraid i'd be so nervous i'd forget to check the direction i pointed it. with my luck i'd spray myself.

I actually have think about this before, as pepper spray is too small and can't spray very far. What I had in mind was a lighter and wasp spray combined together. All you have to do is light the fire and spray it and you can fire like a dragon!! The only worry is that if you put it in your can, wouldn't it might explode because it is pressurized. And it it hard to bring around too.

That's a great suggestion! I would never have thought of that but it makes a lot of sense. The only trouble there is possible eye damage that a scumbag could sue you for. Too bad they don't make it in smaller cans so we could carry it more easily!

I would probably spray me too... I didn't know wasp spray was available. It's hopefully good for spraying wasps too. They can be a real problem where we live. We tend to use fly spray and a lighter, igniting the spray as we let it go but this is so dangerous as the can could explode and you still have to get fairly close to the nest. I worry about my elderly Dad trying to rid himself of the pesky critters...I'll be looking for wasp spray for sure. Thanks.

yes i would think it would be better than taking a chance on the flame making the can explode on you.

Wow, I never thought of that. I know that a friend of mine carries hairspray (small bottle) with her and said she would use that instead of pepper spray if needed. LOLOL Love the last line of your discussion... that would be my luck too!

Sounds like a good idea. But i would worry about leaving it in a hot car. Or even a cold one, as it may freeze too.

I have plenty of handbags so that would not be a problem for me. I would get the smaller cans.

yep another problem. you'd have to find something big enough to carry it in.

That is a funny one. This is for all the women out there who carry around a bottle of pepperspray, now you can just carry around a bottle of wasp spray lol.

Wow, now that is something to have on the nightstand in case of intruders. A can of wash spray and a baseball bat..blind them then knock out cold till the cops get there..but then again..might be a lawsuit out of that. I think that it is easier to find wasp spray then pepper spray and probably less costly. Thanks for the useful information I appreciate it.

Very interesting what a can of wasp spray can do. I couldn't bring myself to use a can of that stuff though. Like you, I'd probably end up spraying myself with my luck.

Thanks for passing this on for it's really good to know how to protect ourselves especially in this day in age with so many people in need of jobs where there aren't any to be had. It's a sad sad world right now but hopefully we'll be getting on our feet again soon and not need so much protection but having it around is a really good idea.

Good Morning Bon, i had read this before & think it's a very good idea, I have also thought of hairspray which is something i guess most people still use. I know it really burns your eyes if u get it in your eyes. Thanks for the helpful tip. I hope it will help someone. We still have a rapist here on the loose so i have certainly already thought of this. Have a good day.

This does seem like a good idea, I just think I would have trouble remembering to grab it in the time of need. You bring up a good point about checking the direction. You would not want to spray yourself and add injury to insult! (This statement was intentionally said in the reverse).

It's bad that a Church is seen as a target for robberies..ANYBODY being targetted for a robbery isn't a good thing, but a Church that's there for the spiritual help that people would need,as well as working for those in physical need like the homeless ..So a wasp spray wouldn't be considered as an offensive weapon by the Police? when it gets to the stage that a robber can sue on injuring himself when breaking into someone's home, you sometimes wonder whose side the law is on..

Very good information. I appreciate that because I am getting ready to travel and I thought of getting some pepper spray just incase because I will be by myself. This is good information. Not sure what the security people will say but we will see. Spray paint an arrow or something so you can see where you are pointing it. Thanks again.

Hi bunnybon7, That is a very good idea as no one would suspect anything, it is so bad these days that you have to have these things just to protect you, but its good coming from a police to advise her. Tamara

Hey bunny! I really like that idea! I always have a spare can of bug spray in the house! Does it have to be wasp spray? I should keep that in the house since I am allergic to wasps! I was bitten by one when I was in high school and had a deadly reaction instantly! I was lucky to be alive the doctor said! Now I carry an Epipen in case I ever get stung by one again or a bee! I think that is a great weapon! I don't know too many places that carry mace and pepper spray anyway!
@bunnybon7 (50973)

Excellent discussion! There are states where mace and pepper spray are considered 'weapons', and therefore illegal to have. Wasp spray is a great alernative, and readily available anywhere. I would be careful with having a can stored in the car however, especially in the summer. With the temperatures that a car can get to, they could explode. You're much better off to carry a huge handbag and keep it with you.

It is of great use and thank you for giving us this information. I will get some too and some for my daughter. Anything that can be used to protect ourselves should be used, The whole world has gone mad, absolutely mad and women and children are attacked and abused like it doesn't mean anything to anyone. I am out to buy some in my lunch hour today. Thanks again and keep safe.
