"SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - – A French teenager's claim that an Apple iPhone shattered in his face is a first involving the device but similar incidents have occurred with the iPod according to a US television station.
Marie-Dominique Kolega, whose 18-year-old son was struck in the eye by a piece of glass when the screen shattered on his girlfriend's iPhone, has threatened to file a complaint against Apple following the incident.
According to Kolega, the phone began making a hissing noise and the screen suddenly broke, sending pieces flying in the air.
"My son was frightened but he did not lose an eye," Kolega, of Aix-en-Provence in southern France, told AFP.
The report is the first such incident involving an iPhone.
But US television news station KIRO reported in late July that an "alarming number" of iPods "have suddenly burst into flames and smoke, injuring people and damaging property."
The station said that Apple lawyers tried to stop it from getting hold of hundreds of pages of iPod-related documents from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in California, where Apple has its headquarters.
It said the 800 pages of documents included information on "15 burn and fire-related incidents blamed by iPod owners on their iPods."
There were no reports of serious injuries, and the cause of the trouble appeared to be overheated lithium ion batteries, according to the Seattle -based television station's review of the paperwork.
The CPSC indicated that the number of incidents was low considering the tens of millions of iPods sold and that such reports diminished after Apple evidently changed the battery technology, according to KIRO.
There was no immediate response from Apple to AFP requests for comment."
Men, this is alarming. iPhone should look unto this. Anybody here who experienced these symptoms because you may carrying a 'thing' that anytime may explode.

I've never had a problem with any Apple products, so this is very weird indeed. Hopefully Apple gets this all sorted out soon and nothing overly bad happens to them.

+1 linkmaster111, maybe customers should also give feedback to them for speedy action from Apple and not just in the media.
Happy myLotting!

I have an Apple iPhone 3G and if there are events like this happening, Apple really needs to get aware of the problem and fix it, as it could be dangerous to consumers who buy their products. It also costs them money to buy another one.

You are right minhminh0604,
Customers will be aloof of Apples products and they are scared because of concerns they might end like the kid. If this goes on and on it will cause Apple a lot.

Good day r3px4storm,
I was just planning to buy an iPhone, and based on this story I think I should have some second thought on buying this cell phone made by Apple . By the way what is version of iPhone that said to be explode on the face of its owner? is it iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G or the new iPhone 3G-S? But I think it is the iPhone 3G-S, because it is the cheapest iPhone that have been made by Apple.

Greetings Brienn!
Yes, might consider first what Apple will do with these issues that came pouring in like what actions they are doing to prevent harm to their customers. Knowing that it is hitting their most popular product today, this will take time before you decide to purchase.
The news story didn't mention about the model but will look deeper into it and will come back to you.
Thanks for the comment and happy myLotting!

Wow how could Apple let this happen?
By the sound of when the 18 year-old said the phone began to make a hissing noise sounds like some sort of pressure build up in the system.
The only other similar case i known is when i had a blackberry bold and something happened with the battery and it melted the back of the phone although i did get a full refund back from the shop in which bought the phone.

Hi E3cater!
Nokia had some issues like this way back last 2008 if I'm not mistaken. What Nokia did way they recalled all of their specific type of batteries made for that certain model of cellphone.
Thanks for your comment! Happy myLotting!

Now i've just realised another case of this by Apple but it was in Mac computers in Australia. Apple had to recall all specific batteries as they would either leak acid, explode, melt the macbook itself.
Dell also had this problem a few years ago with laptops i guess it's just trial and error maybe they tested one-thousand notebooks and maybe theres a one in ten-thousand chance of it exploding.

Indeed E3carter, that some manufacturers did not gone through Quality Control. If they did, nothing would had happen like the one you've said.

I hope Apple will fix this problem as soon as possible. This is very ironic. When the iPhone getting popular now, a problem came into the product. I think the smaller gadget with great features and component will risk such thing. Actually such incident is not the first time in high technology industry. I think the government must respond too by making new regulation to make sure the manufacturing progress and to protect customer from any incident. Although we have such regulation already, but in some cases, customers can't get a fair compensation. Serious or not serious injuries, an injury is an injury. Vendor shouldn't makes any reason to protect their failures. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

Helo there dianmelydia!
I agree, that regulations should be more stricter like adding a fault clause ensuring both parties are given due consideration and make immediate investigation especially on accidents so that public may know if their product is really safe and convenient for customers.
This gives me creeps though because its a brand new technology of Apple and given a popular rating but suddenly this things happen. Men, this will really ruin their marketing because obviously it was not thoroughly tested.
Thanks for commenting and happy myLotting too!

Wow, what a story. I don't have the iphone, but I do have the ipod touch. I just hope that it doesn't happen to it. I don't really use it all that much so maybe I am safe, and I just bought it a few months ago. I think if I had AT&T, I wouldn' buy the iphone either. I am with verizon and they have a phone close to the iphone.I am just glad to hear that the boy didn't lose his eye, as that would have been horrible. Apple sure does need to do something so this incident doesn't happen again. I think they need to revamp it so it won't happen. Take care, and happy mylotting.

Hi Rosekiss,
Im observing though, that older products of Apple or even other popular brands is more reliable than new models. It seems they lack quality control on their part. It is much disturbing if that boy had really lost his eye, and I think it will hit Apple hard.
Happy myLotting too!
