hair straightening/perming/coloring - can u do without it?

I have seen that everyone these days have their hair straightened,colored or permed.Seriously I mean as far as females are concerned almost everyone does it and quite a no. of males do it as well.I have done permanent straightening twice myself.However I m a bit conscious 'cause it does lead to hairfall. Have you guys also done it and seen the repurcussions? Do you think its a good thing to do or maybe a straigntening/curling iron is good enuf.Are we caught in a fad that when everyone looks decked up - all stylish and adorned, we feel forced to also follow suit?
