Have you ever seen an overweight old person?

Although I don't consider myself old, I will be 70 in a couple of months, and am some 30 pounds overweight. Recently, a friend commented to me that you rarely see an overweight old person. Since he is 5 years older than me, I'm guessing that over eighty might be old to his way of thinking. I have found it particularly difficult to lose weight in recent years but feel that extra pounds reduces the quality of life in old age. I base this on the fact that I have a brother-in-law who is 93 and weights 119 pounds and is healthy, in fact still living in his own home. My mother who passed away at age 86 weighed less than a hundred pounds and was in good health until she had a stroke and passed away a couple of weeks later. I have also noticed that older people who have extra weight have more health problems. What has been your experience from observing either family or friends?

I have seen some in their seventies who are quite overweight, but not in their eighties, yet. I say yet, because it was in the late forties that they started to process food and those who are in the 80s now had a more natural diet. I know that grain fed beef is not as healthy as open range beef and that there is little chromium in it. I find that since I started to take chromium my weight went down. I feel that when those who are in their 60s get to be 80, there will be a lot of overweight 80 years olds. They just have not appeared yet because the elderly now had a much healthier diet. Of course, it could be that they can't eat as much as food as lost its good taste or they are too poor and eat dog and cat food.

Hi suspenseful, Sorry for taking so long to response to your comment but it seems I miss one or two on almost every discussion and sometimes more. You have a good point about the healthier diet of those now in their sixties, it's something that I hadn't thought off. It has always seemed to me that those who were slim were more likely to live into the 80's and 90's. Also the quality of life would be better because weight is always a problem for the aged. Blessings.

My grandma is probably overweight. I think carrying around extra weight has to put more stress on joints, bones, ligaments, tendons etc. Shes 80 and has arthritis and has had both hips replaced and a knee i think. I
f you're lighter, i guess it means your body will suffer less wear and tear and last longer. Although im sure being underweight isnt good either. 119lbs sounds a little low for an adult male. Some fat or muscle could cushion impacts perhaps, and fat reserves might be needed if you're ill.
Personally i think aiming for a BMI right in the middle of the healthy range would be perfect, so that would be a BMI of 21.7.
Im sure plenty of low impact excercise would be good, such as walking or swimming. And try to eat a healthy diet. Those things can surely only improve your health.

Hi rjl1989, Thank you for commenting and we agree. Depending on height etc, I think 150 lbs might be a better weight for a healthy male. As one ages it is easy to put on extra weight unless one keeps active.I think that both walking and swimming are among the best exercises. Blessings.

I am very surprised to find that elders in my country are mostly slim and obesity is not a problem here. It is probably related to our diet. We eat only a little fat and much vegetable. And exercise is very popular. Overweight do harm to our health, so I think we'd better make a good diet and keep exercise.

Hi Donna, Thank you for your comment. I feel sure that you are right in saying that being overweight is bad for our health. I think too that young and middle aged people should realize enough to keep their weight down. It is very difficult to lose weight when you get older and it most certainly affects the quality of life. Blessings.

Hello Pose. We have a saying that it is better to stay thin rather than to gain weight when one is getting older because extra weight might cause some health trouble. My father is eighty-three, thin but very healthy physically while my mother is a little bit over-weight based on our standard of weight and height in China. I wish you all the best, my dear friend.

My mother will be 70 at the end of this month and she is overweight due to a lot of different medications that she is taking.Especially cortizone which makes you gain weight.
She has rhumatiod arthritis and takes a lot of medication for that. She also has a heart problem which she takes pills for daily.
In may of this year she was diagnosed with diabetes.
She would not be overweight if she did not have to take 28 pills a day just to kill the pain and keep her going!

Hi Hatley, Thank you for commenting and I agree that it's much harder to lose weight when one gets older. You son should try to stay slim and he will be healthier in old age himself. I hope that you can lose the weight that you need to lose and I'm working on losing extra pounds myself. Blessings.

I have seen a lot for examples my mom friends aged is from 72 years old and she is fat because she have heart diseases and diabetes at the same time. Then my aunt is a 76 and overweight. She could no longer walks in longer distances or in a road with down lanes. she need to have assistant to assist her every times she walks. Then, a neighbor who is 78 years old still stood straight but not really thin but of average weight. he is very active and even cut the grass in his backyards, manage his own store and very active in attending exercises intended for senior citizen every weekend. While, his other peers are slow to move and easily tired he is very opposite. Also, his hearing and his mind is still good unlike his peers who is younger than him. They all look old, sad and lonely. It worsen the situation when a senior citizen never go out of his house and never socialize. The aging process is faster if you are not active or live a sedentary lifestyles. All I could say if you never take good care of your body, whether you are old and young. Your body will deteriorates fast if you never help yourself to cut down on food that is responsible for gaining your weight. Sometimes the older lives longer than younger adults who are abusive with his body..

Hi neelianoscet, Thank you for commenting and you are right, it is the quality of life that suffers when you are overweight. I too have seen some overweight seniors but they have problems getting around etc. Most overweight people don't live old. I think young people should be more careful about putting on weight because it's harder to lose it when you get older. Blessings.

I notice in my family that my paternal grandparents are fat but my maternal grandparents are really fit. This is due to the fact that my maternal grandparents are active enough so that they don't gain extra weight.

I have many old aged people who are overweight in my family. And most of them seem to complain about pain in their legs. Maybe their legs do not have the strength to hold their body still. And other problems that I've known of them were that they had acidity and would always burp. I hope my comments does not make you feel scary or something, hehe..I just told what I know. Anyway try to reduce your weight not by going on a diet but getting yourself some exercise. That's what is best for the body. I don't want you to go jogging or playing football or basketball at the age of 70, but what I'm asking you to do is go for walks. You can go for walks in mornings and evenings. It will keep you healthy and tension free. Happy mylotting!

Hi pranavpillai, I agree that it's important to watch our weight and overweight people in general are not as healthy. This is especially true when one reaches old age. I intend to do pretty much as you suggest and do walk most days. I intend to do more as well as limit my intake of food, not a particular diet but just eating smaller portions. Thank you for commenting and for your suggestions, I appreciate it. Blessings.

Yes I have seen so much overweight persons. You can easily find overweight persons of any age. Over weighing in not age specific, its much more depends upon your living style and your daily habits. Sometimes it also hereditary. But naturally a healthy old person should not be over weighed.
