Garlic Bread

Who loves garlic bread? I do! Okay, it's not my favorite food ever, but I think it goes well with a lot of pasta dishes and stuff. And it is easy to make. A lot of people have different ways for making garlic bread. One of my friends buys a garlic bread spread and just uses white bread. Another friend uses hot dog buns and puts butter and garlic salt onto them and then puts them in the toaster oven. I like to use real garlic cloves. I buy either a baguette or a French roll, slice into inch thick slices. Then I crush some cloves of garlic, add a bit of Earth Balance (vegan butter/margarine), and then brush that mixture over the bread. I use the broiler to cook it in, so that only the top of the bread is crispy. You have to be super careful not to let it burn though, it only takes about 2 minutes at the most. So do you enjoy garlic bread too? What do you do to make it?

Hi pigglies, I think the method you use is the same one I do but I'm a bit confused as to what a broiler is, is it just a hot grill? Anyway it's good like that with fresh thymne on top as well but I only ever use olive oil on the bread. Another way is just to crush some garlic directly into some butter to make garlic butter, make slits in a loaf of french bread, fill them with the butter, wrap up in tin foil and bake in the oven.

A broiler is usually the drawer underneath the oven, or sometimes it is built into the oven. Basically, it's fire over the top of the bread so that only the top cooks and becomes crispy. I guess if you were using a hot grill, if you flipped the bread over you'd get the same effect (crispy on one side only). I should try the one that gets baked in the oven sometime. I used to make a frozen dinner style garlic bread that went into the oven and that tasted really good.

I have never been good at cooking with anything electric, I didn't even know you could have an electric grill. But I'm glad the other parts work for you. That is a good idea about the parsley. I will add some next time.

Hi pigglies, I've never come across a broiler, thanks for explaining what it is. My cooker is electric and whilst every other bit is fine the grill is less than useless so if we want anything grilled we have it outside the house. I forgot to add for the french bread garlic bread I usually add chopped parsley to the butter as well. Enjoy

I don't make it for me - used to buy it sometimes... but I make it for my client, bread of some sort, spread with either butter or margarine, garlic powder on top and some salt... works for her...

That sounds like how one of my friends make it. You have to make food for your clients?

Oh that is pretty cool. My grandpa had someone there helping him before he passed away. And that guy made some pretty good food. My grandpa liked talking to that guy and even helped him pass the citizenship test since he wasn't a citizen yet when he started.

I'm a home health aide so fixing a couple of meals for my client is part of my job.

I love garlic bread, Ive made a flat bread using pizza dough in my breadmaker before and then simmered garlic and parsley in butter and spread across and ate....but when im in a rush, I make about 4 slices of toast, cut into little triangles and drip the butter mixture over the top...beautiful :)

Oh wow, you are better than me... you can even make the bread! I am not talented at bread making. I tried a few times and then when I poisoned a whole bunch of people at a party with food poisoning from my Amish bread, I gave up.

I love garlic bread be with pasta or as it is. But I don't make my own garlic bread, still ahve to make my own but just wishing. I buy garlic bread from the bakeshop and reheat it or just eat it cold it's still delicious. When I order pasta, garlic bread is also served. And I sometimes order another portion of garlic bread.

Hey, that's still good to be able to have some from a shop nearby. I can't cook very many things myself and I'm always happy with a new restaurant opens and I can get something I like from there instead of having to try to learn to make it myself.

My mom picked up a sort-of-recipe while working in a restaurant a few years back. It's pretty simple. For four slices of Texas Toast (the thick sliced bread), both sides use 1/2 cup softened butter or margarine, 1/4 cup of mayonnaise, and a combination of garlic powder and garlic salt to taste. I also add a small amount of onion powder and about two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. Stir it all up and spread it onto both sides of the bread. Lay the slices out on a griddle or large (12") skillet and brown, slowly, on both sides. If you add the cheese to the butter mixture like I do, you want to cook it very slowly because the cheese will cause it to burn very easily.

Wow, that is a new recipe! I don't eat cheese or mayo though. But someone should see this thread and be able to use it. It's a good resource to have, thanks!

Love it too! We make them with white or whole wheat bread (I prefer the latter) by spreading a thin layer of butter and then spreading half a teaspoon of minced garlic (from the bottle - no muss, no fuss that way)on top. We pop it in a toaster over that fits two slices (we need a bigger toaster oven!) at a time for under two minutes (like you do!). True to say that we eat them quicker than making them. YUM!

Oh I should try whole wheat bread! That almost makes garlic bread sound healthy.
