I have owned horses almost all my life. If you have horses for any length of time, eventually you will run into a colic of some sort or another. Many things can cause a horse to colic, even something as simple as a drop in barometric pressure can sometimes cause a colic!
It is very important for the horse owner to recognize the signs of colic. The classic symptom is rolling or thrashing on the ground. But a mild colic can be exhibited by the animal biting at it's flanks, standing 'parked out', and I've even see a horse that will lift it's upper lip when colicing.
The main thing to know is that if you even suspect colic, get the help of a vet ASAP. Time is of the essence in a colic situation. If the horse's gut is twisted, the longer that you wait for help, the less the chance of the horse surviving.

No, mine hasn't. I know that it is bad for a horse to have colic. We have been worried about mine getting it as he is so hungry due to being in with other horses before we got him that would not let him eat. I have really rationed the food that he eats so that he doesn't get it or founder himself.
