Do you buy your kids new wardrobes for school?

When it is time for my kids to go back to school, I tend to first go through their existign wardrobes, then, if they need something, and they normally do, I go out and buy them a few new outfits to start the year. I know many people who will buy their kids complete new wardrobes at the start of each school year. How do you handle the back to school clothing issue?

My little one gets a mix, as I know she'll grow throughout the year... She'll wear clothing that she had last year, she'll get a few new outfits but new coats/shoes are definite, and some clothes that I pick up from the thrift shop. The fact is that my child, despite just turning 8 years old a week ago, is proportionally the size of a 10 or 11 year old in both height and weight.. She's bound to grow more throughout the year and I need to be able to have the money to accommodate those changes throughout the year... so we spend as needed, as we go :)

My ex husband always wanted the boys to have all new clothes and I was happy to comply, I loved buying my kids new clothes! When they were small they needed the new clothes because they wore out or outgrew almost everything. When they got older, though, I loved buying them new things but hated wasting the perfectly good clothes in their closets. They weren't really wasted, I donated them but we could have saved a lot of money and now the boys think that when something has been worn for a year they need to buy new stuff. The older one is learning differently but the younger one hasn't gotten to that point yet.

Hi lynnemg, my son will be back to school mid September and it will still be too hot for anything other than his summer clothes, but he'll need new sports shoes as always. When it gets a bit colder I'll dig around through last winters stuff as he has the horrible tendency to keep growing and I'll probably find half the trousers nearly reach his knees and then it will have to be new, but I'll wait till it's cold as he might keep growing until then.
