After defeating Tsonga tonight in the semi-finals of the Montreal Masters, Andy Murray will replace Rafa Nadal as world no. 2 next week when the rankings are realeased. Murray has created British tennis history by reaching that position as no Brit has ever been higher than three in the rankings. I wonder if Murray will someday reach number one in the rankings?

i read about this and felt kinda sad for rafael nadal. i mean, the circumstances are just not working for nadal right now, but of course andy murray deserves to be number 2 also. i doubt he'll make it top of the ranks though. murray has to go past federer and nadal, and that sure is very tough.

Everyone seems to think that it would be tough for Andy Murray to get to number one in the world. But do you know that Murray actually holds a 6-2 lead over Federer in their 8 meetings?

Wow that was cool record created by Andy Murray and it is good news for Englishmen and women. I would like to see Murray win the Wimbledon and create a record. But he need some extra edge which was missing this year when he played against Andy Roddick. I hope he is more consistent in his game like Federer and win one major Grand Slam for the UK people.. If he is consistent then he will be soon World No 1 but he has to learn the ways to beat Rafel Nadal and Roger Federer frequently then only he can achieve the World No 1 title..

Well he does have an excellent recent record against Federer having won their past few meetings. He will be one of the favourites to win the upcoming US Open and if he plays like he can it would not surprise me if he did win it.

it was quite unfortunate to see murray not being able to maintain his 2nd spot for long. it looks like the number 2 was somewhat not so lucky for him, cause after that, he slipped to no 3, and then no 4. and there is not much difference between del porto and him, so in maintaing the 2nd spot , he has lost quite a few positions.
anyways, murray had a good 2009, he slipped somewhere at the end cause of injuries. fitness is what separates federer from all these players, even nadal can not maintain a fit run after he became no 1.
anyways lets hope 2010 tunrs out to be an even better year for murray than 2009.

I don't see why not. There's no-one he should fear. He has a winning record against Federer and has shown that he is capable of being Nadal and the other top players. Even if he never won a grand slam, that wouldn't necessarily prevent him from becoming world number one (just look at the situation in women's tennis where people can get to No.1 without winning much of significance), but, in any case, I think he will win a grand slam, perhaps not this year but soon.
