I Really Messed Up!

I had been having some problems with my computer, so I did the thing that I should never have done: I messed with the registry.Of course this led to even greater problems, so I decided to do a system restore(which I've done many times before). Was I ever shocked when my computer restarted and all of my photos were gone plus most of my desktop shortcuts and some other programs I have on there. At first I panicked, but then I took control of myself and reasoned that another system restore would probably bring it all back. In the end I had to perform 3 more system restores, and, yes, I lost most of my updates and a couple of programs, but after working on it for most of the day I have everything back in order. Has this ever happened to you? The valuable lesson I learned from this is that now I understand why we are advised against using registry cleaners in the first place.

My dad is a computer technician and could probably help you also but only if we knew each other. He repairs, and sells computer and computer appliances. I hope you can get that problem resolved and I wish the best of luck to you.

It's not 100% now, Hatley, but at least I am once again able to do the basic things I want to do. I am on a mission now to try and find a really good registry repairer.

I've messed up and fixed my computer more times than I care to talk about. half the time, I don't even know what I did or what the issue is .....I just play around until it is all good again. I'm poor enough that I can't afford a professional and stubborn enough not to give up. Eventually I always get it sorted out. I could never do this as a job unless of course they are paying me very well. it is way too frustrating. oh how many times my computer almost got flown out the window. I have a certain amount of self-control...thankfully.

My situation is similar to yours, sid, in that I don't have much money, so sometimes I try and solve whatever situation arises by trial and error. Only when the problem is clearly outside of my range of knowledge will I resort to buying anything at all.

Funny you mention this as my son-in-law did the same thing to their computer. I showed my daughter how to bring up all the pictures so they could be comfortable knowing they weren't all lost. My next advice was to store all the photos on a cd and update as they take more pictures of their baby. I offered to really look at things and try to recover some of their programs but they had a friend who was going to do it today. They were both so happy the pictures weren't gone from the computer forever. Since I'm not a computer whiz, it's best someone else take over the major recovery issues and reinstall what they need.

It was a painstaking job tracking down an reinstalling the programs that I had lost, carolbee. I even lost all of my updates and had to do all of them over again. I like to think that I am much wiser now.

I have not done anything like that, thank goodness.I would be very frustrated. I am glad you did not permanently lose your pictures.

My dad saves everything to flash drives. He says you can store more. He has done some genealogy research that has more than a million entries.

I agree, GG. In the last year I've lost all of my photos from 3 computers, and I am just now rebuilding my file. I really need to transfer them all to a CD.

I recently purchased the new cyberdefender pc cleaner package. Included in this program is a function for Registry cleaning. I can not say that I am dissapointed, as my pc is indeed faster than it was, but it did not solve all of the slowness and near freezes that occur from time to time.

I have heard of that program, mjgarmise, and I'm glad you had some success with it. I would like to speed up my computer a bit also.

This is the first I am hearing about registry, when I had my gateway computer years ago, I use to do system restore all the time I even went as far as up grading my computer myself, yep I took it apart installed the chip and my pc was upgraded by me, wow was I proud of myself. gateway was my first computer didn't know a thing about them when I made the purchase but after a time I learned and I found system restore to be such a wonderful feature, I also restored the pc back to the company setting a couple of times, I lost everything but hey sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
I have a dell desk top, left it at my moms and my sister jacked it up, I believe there is a virus on it, when I turn it on it says I have to reinstall windows, I tried to do it, but when I put the cd in nothing happens, how can you reinstall something if you can't get it to load, maybe someone can help me out I will really appreciate it, my brother told me if I reinstall windows I will lose everything just the thought makes me so angry, is there a way to reinstall with out losing all the wonderful things I have on my pc,anyboby? I am looking at my dell and its just sitting there looking pretty and I can't use it, this really hurts, my daughter is like mom its broke get rid of it, my computer was fine when I left it at my moms, I know my sister is irresponsible but I took a chance I figured it was just sitting there why not hook it up for her, big mistake, when I ask what happened she is like I don't know it just stopped working, well thats because you did something to it, what the hell did you do, what did you download or open up, her attitude about this really pisses me off.

It is very easy to pick up a virus just by visiting the wrong site, kitty. I know because it has happened to me. That is why I would never be without a good antivirus. As for registry problems, they should be handled by a professional if, like me, you don't know what you are doing. As a suggestion you might try Worldstart.com since they have a load of computer programs that might be able to help you.

Thank you, I have a feeling I may have to take it to someone or have them come to me, I can't get pass the error message someone that really know computers will have to fix this problem for me, but I will check the site, who knows I may get lucky, wish me luck.

I use my Regestry Cleaner every Night and never have a problem lol but I do not manually mess with the Registry as my Reg Cleaner only repairs or removes what can be without damage
I use CCleaner and it is great and works every time
What you did is a total manufacture restore which restores to Computer to standard
I have done this in the past as I had to and then spent Days to put everything back on lol
I now have a Back up Disc so it will not take me that long next time

I have used Ccleaner for years, gabs, but only for cleaning temporary files, etc. I know that there are some good registry repair apps out there, but I wouldn't recommend the one I used even though it had a satisfactory rating.

I learned that the hard way too. I learned never, never, never mess with the registry unless you're completely sure what you're doing. You're lucky you got system restore to work. I've never had much success with that.
So, I figure it's the same with many things in my life, don't mess around with things you don't know much about. Like, I don't tinker with my car, I don't decide what stock to invest in, and I don't monkey around with by PC too much....LOL

Ordinarily, bonbon, I give my computer the utmost respect because there is much about it that I don't understand. I think I just bought the wrong registry repair this time. You're absolutely right that we should not tinker with things we don't know enough about.

Oh dear. I've used registry cleaners a lot and all they do is clean up broken links and remove unwanted files. When I have done a system restore it takes everything back to the way it was when I first got my computer...I've had to back everything up onto a disk or cd first. You were lucky to get photos back and I'm unsure how that happened. But if all is well then I am very happy for you.

I guess this must be a PC type thing, as I don't even know what a registry thing is...LOL I had to look it up. We don't have that with Macs and even if we did no way would I mess around with it...

Yeah, pyewacket, I know all about you MacSnobs!I could only afford one of those in my wildest dreams. One of the first things I learned when I started using the computer is that the registry is not to be messed with, but some lessons are harder to take than others. I did the same thing once before and it resulted in irreversible damage to my computer.

Yes. Mine started due to Javascript and being told to do a restore. Things got pretty messed up. But I learned my lesson and listen to the ones in the know very carefully now days. I hadn't heard of the registry stuff but will certainly take that under advicement. Thanks.

Oh my gosh what a pain. I think that when something goes wrong with your computer it is probably one of the most frustating things. It makes me more frustrated and stressed out than almost anything else. I'm glad you are somewhat back to normal. I've never done a registry cleaning, never even heard of it. I also need to save my pictures on a CD or flash. I keep saying it but haven't done it yet. I really need to put that on a To Do List!
