Hi Chaitra! You have highlighted a very interesting Indian medicine. It is really good for our immune system and I wish that every house-hold should have a Basil plant in his house. We've four well grown basil plants in our home and we keep using Basil leaves in tea etc. and keep chewing raw leaves each day. It is understood that it help strengthen our immune system and protect us from much hyped and talked about Swine flu.

Basil is very easy to grow as well. In the UK it grows well outside in the summer months, and if grown on a windowsill it will grow through the winter as well. I usually use it to add to meals that have cooked tomato in them (pasta dishes etc.), but it is good to know that it is also very good for your health.

that is nice to know that such a common plant gives health benefits. I would imagine that eating any fresh plants are beneficial. Basil is not used very much in Western cooking other than a herb with tomatoes and sometimes pesto sauce. it is certainly not used in Western medicine.

I think this is one surviving Indian tradition which is very logical. That spoonful of 'Holy Water" (Teertham) twice every day is made with Tulasi leaves and protects health. It is indeed the best of preventive medicine. It is good for, Digestion, cough, cold, fever and many other common deceases.
