Prize winning novels

I have read some of the prize winning novels and while some were great to read while others were not worth reading. I picked up on e recently and I was so bored in the starting chapters that I kept it aside after reading certain pages. I am an avid reader and read most of the books that I can get my hands. But after reading the abvoe mentioned novel I was forced to think are the prize winning novels really good? What's your experience in the field?
