Advice for the first laptop for a dummy

Well I have very little knowledge about laptops and my recent search for my first laptop just make me feel headache. Because I am going away for three months, it will be convenient to have a laptop with me just to keep in touch with family, friends and up-to-date issues.
My first concern is the speed and reliability for internet connection. I will go mental if the webpage I want doesn't load in seconds, and I tend to do lots of search in a day. Which laptop on the market offers the best possibility?
I don't think I will use my laptop for music or games. And I won't use it for any purpose other than interneting and typing essays.
I notice the average weight for a decent laptop is about 2.5 kg. Can I find any lighter choice? As for the price, how differently can it range? If there's anything under £400, I will be very happy!
Thx guys. Any suggestion is appreciated.

I'd personally buy a Dell or a Mac, both of which are reliable and high speed, however be aware that the cords on the Dell's are very sensitive.

I have checked Dell's website as well as other brands', and although Dell has the most attractive features, it can easily be beaten by price from other brands. I also found Dell's 'pick-what-you-want' service and it is wonderful to make a laptop with exact features I want, but the price is over my budget. :(
At the end, I chose one of Toshiba L300 series, under 360 pounds, with all features I want, except size (15.4 inches screen, it is gigantic!). The speed is satisfactory, and so far I don't encounter any difficulty of using it. So guess my choice for the first laptop is not too bad. And to be honest, I kind of gain some confidence with computer now. (Hmm, at least I know what is 15.4 screen.)
Thanks guys!

Well for a first laptop, why don't you try a netbook instead? It is cheap, and fits your purpose since you only need it for typing and surfing the net. A good brand for netbook is definitely Asus from Taiwan. A netbook is light and cheap. A perfect option for you in my opinion!

My friend's notebook is Asus Eee pc. It is super light and super cheap. He recommended that one to me as well. But after trying his netbook for Interneting, I was not pleased with speed. (1.6 GHz, you have to WAIT for it to move to next stage, it is like waiting for an old lady to bring you a cup of tea, ahahah~~~) Eee Pc performs well when playing films but I am more picky with browsing speed. So I chose some other brand. But I agree with you, Asus notebook is probably the most popular one on the market at the moment!

Hey,
Just head over to a good laptops site such as Asus' official site or HP's official site, and just browse their huge laptop range, you will see ones that you might really like, some are really good and look quite nice. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

hi there! you don't know how happy I am to see your discussion, cause like you, I want to buy my first laptop and I'm really really lost. Plus all these different opinions is making my head spin.
okay, now first of all, what I've heard is the best brands that are not that pricey are dell, HP and acer. With regards to specs, I think pentium dual core is okay, Core 2 Duo is better. I think you need atleast 2gb, and 250 hard drive..
You could also try netbooks, cause they are cheaper and if you just want to access the internet and nothing more, netbook is better.
Good luck to us both in finding the right laptop for us.

Ah, I bet I am more of a dummy than you think.
I checked netbooks as well and in fact I have been trying my friend's EecPC these days. The loading speed for internet kills me. I have to refrain myself from swearing.:P The best notebook I found so far has 1.65 GHz and 2 Gb momory, weighs 1.45 kg. Price £300. But guess if I want something more than 2 GHz, I have to go for laptop.
Thx for the information. It helps!
