Wow, I have been using these phrases for years, and it is so funny because when I am writing a letter or texting, I am always using these abbreviations and most people are like, "Uh what is that?" lol... I cant help it, I use these in my daily life, all the time! Some other common ones are: lol, lmao, lmfao, g2g, ttyl, rotfl, rotflmao, mil, sahm, omg, w2g, plz, etc. There are hundreds, seriously lol. Those are just some I thought of, off of the top of my head

I starting knewing these phrases since about ten years ago. At that time, internet chatting wes bomming and most of internet users were using irc for chatting. That time was my first time met the brb, gtg, and etc. First time using it i felt strange but slowly later i found that these phrases are very helpful and universal accepted. So i continuing using it until now. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

I don't really like shrinking words but have got used to it because others use it. I was a regular chatter (using online chats) and got to know many of such short forms - i always used to wonder when my friend or cousin used to say BRB and not knowing what they meant i used to go on and on in the chat box
I know a few more that you have not added in your list - G2G (Got to go), TC (Takecare), LOL (Laugh out loud)

I don't know much about abbreviation in English. I only know [i]btw, lol, roflmao/i] The last one (roflmao) I search it by googling yesterday, Yes, this make me confuse and I usually ask directly what's the meaning.. but now I find a site that contain many abbreviation and its explanation. Guess I will go to that site everytime I feel confuse about some word. The site is internetslang.com. Or just googling about it!
