Hello,
If you have a Pentium 4, you might not need to upgrade to anything much higher than that, other than Pentium 4's waste SO much power. Try upgrading to an Intel Core i7 if you want to keep the high performance, and lower the power consumption. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

To upgrade that kind of processor, you will be needing a new motherboard that require a different internal power supply, that will require a different kind of memory module and that support only a specific type graphic card. Notice that what's practically left in your old unit is your drives and your case. These is how components are build these days.
If you will try to upgrade only your processor by a faster one with the same socket type, meaning no motherboard change, the speed improvement that you can get with it is very minimal practically none compared to the processing speed these days. That is if you could still find a reliable one and almost as pricey as the new one.
It would be better to buy a complete set and have two unit or squeeze the best deal of an upgrade. Good luck

are you planning to do extra activities such as extensive multimedia activities (encoding, rendering videos, etc) and other activities aside from the usual stuffs that you do, then yes. but prepare to shell out cash because not only will you be upgrading your processor but it's likely that you have to upgrade your motherboard and memory modules.
you'll notice a speed increase once you've made the upgrade.
if it's just the processor that you wish to upgrade, then make sure that the the new processor would be compatible with your existing motherboard.
if you're satisfied with the speed of your processor, then i'd suggest that you instead upgrade the memory module to 2GB and up.
