QUESTION: Is it normal to breathe in AND out through your nose?

[b]I've always done this, but today, a man who delivered my oxygen told me that's wrong, that normal breathing is "in through the nose, out through the mouth."
...Huh?
All my life I've kept my mouth closed 90% of the time, & seen most others do so. I asked him who told him that, & he said he's been trained at a local community college (one with which I'm not particularly impressed, having had a bad experience taking a class in it years ago).
So, maybe I've just been particularly unobservant all these years, or...maybe he's right!
Anyone here know anything about the respiratory system, who could settle this? TIA, whoever you are!

Normally, we all breathe in and out through our nose BUT, if your exercising (fast walking/jogging), you have to train yourself to breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Your nose filters out the unwanted gunk in the air when you breathe in, especially when your breathing heavy. That's why it's in through nose, out through mouth.

[b]Yes, that I know, but he was telling me you do that all the time, even at rest (& presumably while you're asleep!

Hi Maggiepie...and I guess the guy is an expert...NOT. Nope it's better to inhale and exhale through the nose...the nose has it's own "filtering" system to filter out contaminants even when breathing out. One CAN use the breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth technique however when doing Yogic type breathing..but that's totally different thing
