my local town are not calling it christmas this year, but winterval because christmas may offend minorities or people of other faiths. Is it just me or does that sound insane? christmas is a christian holiday so by getting rid of the christianity bit, what have you got left? I don't get offended when people from other faiths celebrate their holidays. Do any Jewish, hindu, budhists, sikhs, islamists or any other religious or non religious denominations get offended by seeing christian symbols at christmas?

This is a discussion i have had a few times with ppl. And I don't want to offend anyone or make anyone mad. But i think we should be left with our holidays to celebrate how we see fit. Its christmas for goodness sake its about Christs birth we need it to be about christianity if other faiths are offended they don't have to celebrate. I would not go to someone elses country and tell them because i am here you can't have your holiday because it offends me. Come on get real Its a Christmas tree not a holiday tree. CHRISTMAS = CHRIST

I completely agree. Christmas is a Christian holiday, and it shouldn't be denounced because others say they are offended by it. I don't get offended with anyone else's holidays and symbols. We shuold leave holidays as they are and remain to their meanings. I think recently Christmas has turned into like marketing tool, like Valentines day.
Christmas means to celebrate Christ.

Christmas is a christian holiday, and to call it anything else is insane. The purpose is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, hence the CHRIST in Christmas. I have to say I'm getting really tired of the people out there who take offence to my beliefs. I'm supposed to respect them and theirs, but they don't have to respect me and mine. I say if another faith wants to have a holiday and call it winterval, go for it. But be respectful enough of me to allow me to continue having my Christmas. Respect is a 2 way street.

i agree with you, but the stupid thing about this is that no other religious leaders have done this, its our local council who have said that the symbols of christmas could be offensive. Today both Christian and Muslim leaders have said how stupid this is, Britain is supposed to be a multicultural societ so everyone should accept each others traditions. I think its simply Political Correctness gone mad

I do know one thing, no matter what, for me it will always be Christmas complete with Christmas dinner, Christmas tree, and Christmas presents! :)
I would certainly never want to do anything that would offend or hurt anyone else, but I just don't see how what I do in my own home could possibly be harmful.

I will start out by saying that i am not a religious person. now christmas is a christian holiday and i don't think that that should be changed just like i am sure that jewish people would not like it if someone called hanuka something else. i don't think that they shound be able to do that.

You can not have Christmas without Christ. The whole reason for Christmas is to celebrate Christ's birth. Why should we have to rename Christmas just because it offends somebody? We don't ask other religions to change the names of their holiday, occassion, etc.

To remove Christ from Christmas is just plain WRONG!!! He is the reason we have Christmas!

Try living in SA where everything as you know it changes before your eyes. Our country is still young in being democratic, but some of the things going on down here is scary. I love Christ, I love Christmas and to change that, well I feel offened in what they did. If I were you I would take it up with higher authorities!

That's ridiculous...it's a christian holiday. I think it's moved too far away from christianity and should move back to its roots...not the other way around.
