Well this shift might not be a common thing for all the sectors........but for those who work in some sectors like hospitality, airlines, tourism, etc which works round the clock might certainly know what I am talking about......I belong to the hospitality industry and I have done many such night shifts specially graveyard shifts(After 12.00am).......
Many doctors say that your body does not really get proper sleep when you sleep during the day.......but I dint really feel that way......I think its the same as I sleep in the night.......the only noticeable difference is the time lag......they sleep during the night and we sleep during the day.......
What are your views on night shifts ?????
Have you ever done it?
Do you feel your family and social life gets killed doing night shifts ?????

I have done shift work for over 7 years, and at first it is no problem.
But eventually, I would be so tired. I started getting fat from the irregular eating pasterns. Hardly saw my family or friends. I had money but no time to spend it.
I was living to work. When I was not working I would be sleeping.
I had no more social life.
And know all that work has gotten the best of me. I can no longer work.
I even went to the doctor, and asked for help, because I was so tired and burned out.
She asked me what kind of work I did. She send me home, telling me it was normal. Nothing you could do about it. After a while it catches up on you.
Good luck with your shifts.
Try to eat good meals and get good rest.
Take a vacation or time off every once in a while. I did not do that, because I needed the money. But, it is important to take care of yourself.

Well I am glad you understand what I mean.
I had two children to look after at that time as well.
I really did need the money.
Know they are adults making there own money. I thought I would
be able to finally live for me.
Too late, my back is worn out. I did too much.
If I had to do it again, I would look after myself better.
Take care, have a nice day.

A grand salute to you from my side......you actually managed to do night shifts for 7 long years.......
But yes i understand sometimes we all have that drive in us to earn a lot of money, everyone of us wants lot of disposable income by our side and we just forget ourselves and fail to realize that we have the money but not the peace......
Even I have the desire to earn a lot of money, but then I dint really think about what my social life will be like I dint really forecast whats going to happen at a later date......from the points that you mentioned it was certainly an eye-opener for me.......I think I should indeed spend some time for me.......thanks a lot for those tips and advice I will try and keep up with it !!!!!

It is a very difficult situation to be working in night shifts.Because it turns your biological clock topsy turvey. Personally I havent worked on noght shifts but my husband has to sometimes. When I see him trying hard to get some sleep in the day time inspite of all the possible disturbing sounds, I feel pity gor him. Also the food times are all altered and it affects the digestive system too. getting sleep is a major problem and to top it all, the initial days after the shift is worse because then he finds it more difficult to adjust back to the routine. It does affect your social life considering the fact that you will get less time to socialise. by the time you are up you will be all giddy and in a few hours it is again time to dress up for work.
For those in the health care sector, it is night shift plus a lot of stress...Our body detoxifies all the organs at night when we sleep. Uit starts at 10 in the night if I remember right from what I read. So if you arent sleeping at the time u should be it will definitely affect your overall health.

Yes I agree with what you just said, you cant really get SOUND sleep during the day, as there is some disturbance or the other that keeps coming your way......someone just rings in or a relatives drops in........or something or the other keeps happening......so you actually tend to get up a lot of time during the time that you sleep.......I manage to sleep only for say about 5-6hours sometimes, which is absolutely bad.......the docs say that you should get atleast 8 hours of sleep in 24hrs to keep your body functioning smoothly.......
I read somewhere that you should have a lot of water if you are doing night shift as it helps to keep the process of detoxifying your body, which you rightly say happens during the night.......

Grave yard shift? NO THANK YOU!!
Well back when I used to work for British Airways many of my shifts were graveyard shifts and it sucks!! I also used to do graveyard shifts when I worked in Call Centers. The only advantage of working graveyard shifts is you get paid more. But eventually your body gets tired of it so at some point you need to pump the breaks. So yes after 10 years of working grave yard shifts.. I hanged my boots and now am happy with my home based business.
By the way nice to have you back here John

Hi jellymonty,
How are you? well yes I finally got some time to interact with you all here......
I know it does get little fussy when you work in graveyard shifts, I heard you also tend to get a lot of mood swings, and you turn restless if you don't get adequate sleep.......even I had the experience of working in call centers......and offcourse they had to be night shifts as it was an international call center.......I just hope I get some time to relax and spend it on vacations.......
Have a wonderful day !!!!

I feel it depends from individual to individual, some people find it difficult to sustain, while some find it interesting......to be honest, the place where I stay is quite crowded and the trains go jam packed during the day.....so traveling is really a convince for me.......also the company send in a car for us during the night to take us to our work place......so that's again a good thing.......and yes it does have an effect on our whole system, specially the digestive system !!!!!

Hi John,
I have done night shift before when I was working in a factory. The factory is 24/7 and have 3 shift. But some of us come earlier or stay back to make some over time work. I prefer to work at night shift because there is less job to be do and less supervision. There is less supervisor/bosses who are just like to messing around.
It doesn't stop my social life but it definitely reduce the time for it.

I agree with that my friend, sometime the supervisors tend to screw up most of the things, life is just better when they are not around you can work at peace !!!!!

Hey there. If you work within certain industries then night shifts are often a necessity. I used to work in an Emergency Department at a local hospital and worked all kinds of shifts including ones that were from 9pm till 3am. They were the most difficult for me.
Since being with my current partner I have not had to do these shifts. They can be kind of detrimental to your relationship especially wen you live together and are wanting to spend time with one another.
To be honest my parnter and I are probably more night people anyway so if we could both have jobs where we worked later and slept in it would probably suit us!

Thats right, if your partner and you both are doing the same shift then its not really a problem, since you bot find time for each other.......as in many case it happens that when you come back home your partner leaves for work and vice versa......so the only time they actually communicate or rather have an interaction is on weekends or when they both have a common off........
Thanks for your input buddy !!!!

I am not in favour of working night shifts. Being a woman, the safety factor is the prime deterrent for me. Though nowadays we have a lot of ladies working night shifts and the companies provide pick-up and drop facilities from their homes, even then I hear of so many incidents of girls being abducted and then raped and murdered!
Apart from that, working nights and taking rest in the day disturbs the body’s natural biological clock which I don’t think would be very healthy in the long run.
And then we have the family to think about too…married people with kids would have more difficulty in adjusting, specially with regard to children whom they can interact with very seldom if they are working nights and sleeping during the day.

I can understand dear,
Specially in our country it is not that safe for a women to travel in the night, men just are waiting to pounce on women as if they have never ever seen them in their life, I have a sister so I can understand with what great insecurity a women has to go about these days......also the law relating to the women crime is so petty, they just manage to get away with things with a never ending trial.......so somewhere yes it is unsafe for women to work in the night......
And yes married people do find it difficult to cope up with their life specially when they have kids, as during the day the kids go to school and other classes and they don't really have the time to spend quality time with them and in the later stages they do have a bad impact on them !!!!!

I have never worked one single night shift and I don't wish to start now. I work until midnight from 4 or 6 in the afternoon and that is as late as it gets.
I feel that the disrupted sleep pattern and family life is not worth the extra pay that the night shift would reap. Here after 10 pm it is already the night shift as far as pay is concerned and it is worth the extra for those two hours but I would never consider doing more hours after midnight.
I admire those that have to do work nights in hospitals and the police departments and the like but often wonder what sort of family and social life they could possibly have. My father worked nights and we rarely saw him during the week at all

Hi diana,
Well I certainly agree with you that our family and social life gets totally hampered when we do night shifts......but then as you rightly pointed out there are some jobs which require you to do night shifts, its just a part of your profession and you cant really do anything about it......and specially in times of recession one cant really be choosy on what job he prefers and what not......how I wish we had that choice......

Night shift certainly affects our social and family life. Some people hardly see their family members during work days. When the person doing night shift is sleeping others are awake and when that person is awake others are asleep. It might have an effect if the shift is followed for years. The problem with health when you might do a rotating shift. For ex: one week of day shift then one week of night shift.
I think this is the first time I am using the sleep emoticon.

I've had to work the night shift, myself, and I do believe that the time lag makes a difference. I've worked as a nurse's aide in two nursing homes and there were plenty of times when I had to work the night shift. I've also worked in a convenience store that was open 24/7 and I had to work the night shift there. It's rough but I think it's worth it if you need the money. You might be surprised at how many people work at night. Some nurses who work in a hospital or nursing home work at night. Some doctors are on call at night. Some doctors work in the emergency room at night. Hotels and motels are open 24/7 and there are people who work there at night. Truck drivers are on the road at night. It's interesting to think about how many people are up while we're sleeping. Kathy.

Hi kathy, how you doing ????
I had actually forgotten to mention so many other sectors which work during the night......its really amazing to see so many people work at night.....I had never heard about this night shift thing a decade back, but with the era of 5-star hotels, motels, 24/7 convenience stores, and offcourse the call centers..........people work at lot at night......and yes you get to earn good money when you work against your system.......but then I don't really know till when will I go on like this.......but as of now I am OK with it, as I don't have a wife waiting back at home or children waiting for me to take them out for a ride........
Have a nice day Kathy !!!!

Hello John4Christ this is checkmail and think night shift for working will be cool.As normally i had worked int eh morning and day shifts and really got bored by it, as the time passes too slowly, and there is lot of disturbance during day time.Imagine a night shift job with quicky time going, no disturbance, no stress, no more boring in day light, just enjoyment.

well I guess you have a pre-conceived notion about working in the night......well trust me it is exiting.....but then the work that you do is the same that you do during the day......and trust me the time between 12.00am to 5.00am passes by very slowly, specially because you tend to feel sleepy and its normal to feel sleepy as our body is so used to sleeping in the night......but then yes I love working in the night.......I love to work in the dark !!!!!
Thanks for responding !!!!

At the age of 21 I worked in a nursing home 11-7 shift.
at first, i felt OK but after a couple of weeks I started to walk around like a zombie. I came home about 7:30AM got to sleep about 8:30 then back up at 1 or 1:30
I had 2 Kids to take care of until I went back to work at 11PM , after a while I became very thin and pale. The night shift did not agree with me.Also I feel that I was not as focused during the day.
My Grandmother always told me the best sleep you can get is is if you go to bed before 12.00AM let's say 10 PM and sleep until 6 or 7 Am . Today I have to agree with her.
I surely don't envy ANYONE having to work night shift, even if they get sleep during the day.

I agree, I just started working in night shifts and I don't really feel affected as of now but i am sure in the long run it indeed will......and yes you grandmother is absolutely right, even my mom says that the best time to sleep is during the night.......our body does some servicing work during this time, so if we keep our system running during the night, our body cannot work on it, and i the long run it tends to wear off.......
Thanks for the response !!!!

I have worked in hospitality as well, though my shifts were a bit different. As a banquet server, I would work many different hours, sometimes coming in as early as 5 AM and not leaving until 12 AM... thought it's been awhile since I've worked in this field (2 years) so my memory may be foggy on that. Though I did not get very much sleep, what with living with my grandparents and constant distractions or people waking me up. Though I do believe my grandmother didn't think I actually worked that long, she thought I to be a har-lot... GASP! I was very upset, but more amused because of her lack of... what's the word? Trust!
I am so sorry to have gone off subject... Night shifts do seem better, but only if it is a regular shift and not wish washed around!

Hi SomeCowgirl,
I completely agree with you dear.......my shifts always keep shuffling every two weeks or so.....sometimes its a evening shift and sometimes graveyard shifts......as far as sleep is concerned I manage to get adequate sleep but then if someone come to my place or someone makes some noise then I just wake up from my sleep and then I can never get back to sleep.......I don't know it always happens with me.......
