Hi! It also happened in my old PC. The "ON" power switch did not work (it is sometimes due to lose connection inside). I turned off and unplugged the computer, opened the CPU, and pressed the power supply hard. When I turned on the power again it worked fine now.

Well I am facing the same problem.. mostly it's problem of power supply or sometimes it's because of moisture inside CPU. if you know how to open and close CPU cabinet. just open your CPU and remove dust from it and put it under fan for almost 5 minutes then close the CPU cabinet. it will turn on.

Hello sample2009!!!
The problem is crazy. I have also faced that problem and most recently too. Infact I have face that problem twice. But in two different computers.
The first time I got this problem in a computer about 6 months ago. Like you said, sometimes it would run and sometimes it wouldn't. And at last, it rarely run. We took it to the repair the board, I don't know what the problem was, but it was fixed then.
And recently too, in my computer it happened. And it was the problem of power supply. Sometimes, I could run the computer without any problem, but sometimes it is very very difficult to open it. But once I run it, then it runs very well. And now its totally gone I think. I tested it with another power supply and it ran. So the problem may also be power supply too. Try testing it with another power supply and if the power supply is the real problem change it....
It can be another problem, if the problem is board rather than the power supply.
And while running the computer, try taking out the cable of power suppy into the board and taking out it again until it runs...
Good luck and hope that helps...
Happy mylotting...

Few weeks back I had the same problem with my desktop computer. With the doubt of some virus I scanned with four different anti virus software and then formatted the system. But even then I was not able to start the system as and when I need. I had to try many times to start the system. Finally I checked the start switch and found the problem was with that. Some contacts ware not working well and I changed with the help of a technician. Now it is working well. Please try to check that also as there is little possibilities for the failure of the switch also.We can not ignore that one.

the button itself maybe loose or something. as what the others have mentioned, check the wiring and the button itself. there might be a part that's broken near the power button. if there is, then you probably need to chanse your computer's casing / chasis.
