Do you like to go swimming in the ocean whenever you go to the beach? I do. I especially enjoy riding the waves. I must admit that I am afraid of sharks, though. I just wish I knew of some ways to avoid or at least reduce being attacked by them. They say the best way is to stay out of the ocean but that's the main reason why I go to the beach, although I haven't been in several years. One thing I like to do is look out over the ocean and think about all the countries that are over on the other side, although they are many miles away. I think about all the people over there, too. I told my oldes nephew one time that I did this and he said it just looks like it goes up in the sky to him. What about you? Do you think about the countries on the other side and the people over there? Or do you think the ocean looks like it's going up in the sky?

My childhood was spent in a home just a few minutes away from the beach and so I loved the beach in all of its moods. We lived in the U.K. so it was not always sunny but we would go into the water even when it was raining or cold. I loved looking for treasure when the tide went out too and spent many hours wondering about the countries out of sight across the water. Little did I realise that when an adult I would be living on a very small Island - and again by the sea. The sea is not grey though but usually sparkling blue or turquoise and the weather is usually good. Changes though if there is a thunderstorm or hurricanes. No sharks in the U.K.either but way out in the ocean there are sharks here but I have never seen any. I have seen manatees and that was a thrill as they are an endangered species and I have seen dolphins in the wild. I cannot imagine my life without the sea nearby.

I don't actually live beside the sea know but in the hills. However on a clear day then I can part of the ocean. I would live on the sea where there are hurricanes!

I remember it rained just about everyday when we went to Florida in 1963. My oldest nephew and I managed to get to go swimming a lot, though.
It sounds like the water is a lot prettier where you live now! I've been to The Bahamas so I know about what it's like down there. I took a cruise down there in 1990.
I imagine it would get very rough whenever a storm or hurricane comes up. My brother used to live in Gulf Shores, Alabama and they had a lot of rough weather down there. That's why I'm glad I don't live near the ocean, myself. I just like to visit occasionally. Kathy.

Hi Antiquelady! It's been a long time since I've been to the ocean. I don't know when or if I'll ever get to go back. I don't mean to sound pessimistic but it will depend on my financial situation. I was thinking about when I used to go when I was younger when I started this discussion. I just got to thinking about how I used to gaze out over the ocean and think about the countries and people over there and I just wondered if anybody else did the same thing.
I hope you do get to go to the ocean someday. If you can't swim, it's always nice to go for a walk on the beach. It's very relaxing. Kathy.

I do both .
and I like riding the waves too.
NEver got to get in the Pasific was raining and very cold the day I got to that beach just put my hand in to say I did.
the Gulf and Atlantic was more freindly and we picked places that there were no Sharks.
Also were there on those beaches longer than we spent on the West coast!

Hi Lakota12! The Pacific Ocean is definitely rougher than the Atlantic Ocean. I have been swimming in both of them. I went swimming in the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii in 1972. I still enjoyed it no matter. Sharks must not be near as bad in some places as they are in others. They are really bad down in Gulf Shores, Alabama and Florida, especially in Daytona Beach. I have a mylot friend who goes swimming in the Yellow Sea and he says sharks are not a problem there. That's good. Kathy.

I am also afraid of sharks when I go to the beach so I don't usually swim. Another big problem is that it is very cold and foggy in our city even during the summer so it's never warm enough for a swim except in indoor pools. When I'm at the beach, I like staring out at the ocean and imagining the sea life out there.

I can understand your reluctance to get in the water, due to the cold. What I can not understand is being concerned about the sharks in the water. I have seen the movie "Jaws" with all of it's sequels, and it is scary, but most people can separate fact from fiction. Movies are similar to dreams, in that, they don't USUALLY HAPPEN. Don't get me wrong, shark attacks do happen, but they are VERY INFREQUENT. To stay out of the ocean, because of the possibility of it happening, is depriving yourself of some of the joy of living and experiencing different things. Try it out just so you can say "I did it and I survived." If we do not do any of the things that others have done before us because of what "Might happen", could we actually call this living? I would call it just surviving.

Hi ya Kathy: I'd love to be that close to a beach and "try" to at least
go out swimming in it, I'd be very very afraid of sharks too...
however I'd love to be close enough to touch and swim with dolphins
now that would be Awesome!!
Someday I hope to get to a beach, somewhere anywhere and be able to
look out into its vastness, and let my mind wander...(sigh) that
would be so nice, so very very nice...
I'm not sure what I would think upon seeing and viewing the ocean like that?
for me I guess it would appear as if it just would go on forever and ever??
watch out for those sharks now ok? (G)!!!

Hi Jan! I don't live near the ocean or anything. In fact, it's a little over 600 miles south of here in Gulf Shores, Alabama, which is right on the Alabama-Florida state line. When I started this discussion, I was thinking about when my family and I used to go down there a lot on vacation.
It would be fun to swim with the dolphins, wouldn't it? I think they're so cute! I wouldn't mind having one for a pet. I don't think it would survive in my pond, though, lol. Thank you for responding. Kathy.

I live in India which is a tropical country and i love to swim in beach. Here you need not afraid of Shark and other sea habitat's attacks as there are no dangeorous sea animals are found here. It is absolutely safe to swim across the beaches in India. But only on the day of Tsunami - Dec-26 2004, the eastern coast of India faced a disaster of Tsunami waves which claimed 1000's of Human lives and I am quite fortunate to escape from the wrath of Tsunami as my house is located just around 150 meters away from beach. I still remember that deadly day. Apart from that incident, nothing untoward had happened to anyone while swimming in the beach.

The last time I was to the Ocean was 2 yrs. ago when we were on Vaction and visited Cape May NJ. We did walk in the ocean with no shoes on for a bit, but I did not swim there. It has been a long time for me since I swam in one, and since I am not the best of swimmers I do not usually go anywhere to swim as well.

I don't know how good a swimmer I am but I still enjoy it, anyway. I only got to go swimming one time last summer and this past summer, I didn't go at all. It surprises me as much as I like to swim. That just goes to show you how busy I am I guess. We have a natatorium here in Jasper now but they charge to go swimming there. They do have an indoor pool now and I might try it this winter. Kathy.

Yes, I feel that the ocean is the best and healthiest place to swim. I have always found that the salty water is good for healing small wounds like cuts and grazes. I don't go so much now, but I was always swimming in the ocean when I was a kid and much preferred it to the public swimming pools that have chlorine added.
I am in the UK, so we don't get problems with sharks. I would say the greatest threat may be a crab, and I've never had a nip from one of those either. Around some of our coastline, we have to be careful of underwater currents that can difficult if we get caught in one as it can take us out to sea and we would have a long way to swim back.
I often look out to the horizon and work out where the next piece of land would be, and what sort of country I would arrive at if I could just keep swimming towards the horizon. I am not that strong a swimmer though! - Derek

Yes, it would be interesting to keep swimming and see what country we end up in, wouldn't it? It would be a long way from the states, though, and I'm not that strong a swimmer, either. Kathy.

Hi Cyrus123, I love going to the ocean. Spent a week camping with my sons in NC this summer. Watched the dolphins jumping and playing. I think the sound of the ocean is very relaxing and great to fall asleep to!
I do think the ocean looks like it's going up to the sky, sometimes the way they look, I can't tell the difference of which is which.
I used to think about the countries on the other side of the ocean, but now with the internet I think about my friends that live overseas, how far I'd have to swim to get there and yeah, wonder if a shark would want to try to snack on me! not something that I want to find out!
I guess next time I go to the ocean, I'll email some of my overseas friends and see what they're up to and it'll give me more to think about!

I kept telling my youngest I would take him to the ocean and as much as my back would have loved it in a regular bed at a motel, me and the boys took tents and camped in a state park. We stayed in a motel one night on the way there.
I wanted to find the cheapest way to get what they wanted.
We also saved all of our change for a year and used that for gas money. Sometimes it's hard to not dip into the change, though!!

Hi mzz663! It's good to hear from you again. It sounds like you had a good time in NC this summer. I love to travel but due to my financial situation, I haven't been anywhere in 10 years. I also think the sound of the ocean is very relaxing. I have a cd I sometimes play at night to help me go to sleep that has ocean waves on it.
I think dolphins are so cute! My parents, oldest nephew, and I saw some at Marineland in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1963. I wouldn't mind having one for a pet, lol. I have a pond (actually, it's a big lake but we always called it a pond) in front of my house and I doubt it would survive in it. Kathy.

oh i love the beach and i do love to just stare at the wide area of the ocean. i even like looking on that bodies of water when we go to some islands in our countries. it just looks so peaceful and wonderful... i could sometimes see the corals deep down when the water is so clear and bluish green sometimes. i even tried snorkeling and watch the corals that are alreay too large and long... oh i just love it.
yes i even like to think of what might be beyond that point where the ocean are all to far out. what is beyond there and it surly looks like it touches the sky in one end.

Hi jheLaichie! Thank you for responding. Yes, the ocean is very peaceful. I like to hear the waves crashing against the beach at night. I have a cd I listen to at night to help me sleep better sometimes that has ocean waves on it. I went to The Bahamas in 1990 and I went snorkeling down there. That was a lot of fun. We didn't see many fish that day. Just a few small ones. Kathy.

I live in the mountains of montana but the last time I saw the ocean it seemed to me like the boats go forth for some reason ! My guess is there are thousands and thousands of people across the ocean, but never been there.

I bet it's beautiful where you live! I used to travel a lot and I've been to Montana and have seen the mountains there. I've been to Bozeman, Bute, Helena, and Billings, Montana. I used to travel with tour groups and one time, we entered Yellowstone National Park coming from Montana.
I live in Jasper, Alabama, which is 43 miles northwest of Birmingham so I'm a pretty good distance from the ocean. I was mainly thinking about when my family and I used to go to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach,Alabama. That's a little over 600 miles south of here, on the Alabama-Florida state line. We used to go to Florida a lot, too, when I was a child. I have also been to Hawaii, The Bahamas, and to Europe. I went swimming in the ocean in these places, too. When we went to Europe in 1973, I went swimming in the Mediterranean Sea in Nice, France. I feel like I'm bragging when I say I've been to all these places but I have. I've seen the beaches in California, too, but didn't get a chance to go swimming there.
The boats you saw were probably cargo ships or cruise ships. I always enjoyed watching them, too. When I went to The Bahamas in 1990, I took a cruise. Kathy.

No, you didn't tell me you were going to Oklahoma this winter. I hope you have a good time while you are there. You will have to keep in touch. What part of Oklahoma are you from? I have been to Oklahoma City. My family and I spent the night there one time on our way home from out west. Also, I went with a tour group out west one time and we stopped to see the Cowboy Hall Of Fame. I really enjoyed that. That was in 1988. We also stopped in a little town called Cherokee, Oklahoma. I would love to go to Tulsa, Oklahoma sometime. I hear that's a beautiful city. My mother's first name was "Tulsa", btw. Her daddy named her because her mother never could think of what to name her kids, lol! She never did like that name, though. But, you know, those kinds of names are popular now. My grandfather used to go to Oklahoma quite a bit. That was a LONG time ago. That's where he came up with the name. I don't know what it was he did there but he had something to do with the Indians. Kathy.

I live in huntington beach, southern california and over here we don't have sharks we have dolphins. The only thing you have to be worried about is stingrays, you step on them and they stab you with venom. It is still rare, but some beaches along the southern california coast like seal beach nicknamed "Ray Bay" gets up to 10 to 15 reports of stingray stings a day. I go to the beach every day bodysurfing and bodyboarding and I have never been stung.

In my country I don't hear much news about shark attacks. And we have a lot of very lovely beaches here. Lots of beautiful resorts. I love to go swimming only in the morning when the sun is not so hot yet. Sun often burn my skin. It's so painful. I know there are sunblocks out there but I just don't like applying some on my skin. It's sticky and I hate it.

Thank you for your response. As I said, I love to go swimming in the ocean, myself. I'm sure it's more fun to go swimming in an ocean where you don't have to be so concerned about sharks. I always say to each his own, but I prefer going swimming a little later in the day. I went swimming in the ocean in the morning down in Gulf Shores, Alabama one time and I kept feeling fish rubbing against my legs. I can't stand that feeling especially if I can't see what it is. I figured this might be the worst time for sharks, too. Kathy.

I love swimming in the ocean. When I was younger I used to like to ride the waves into the sand but now that I'm a little older its kinda rough. I like to just sit out just past the waves and float. My boyfriends afraid of the ocean though so he won't go in it with me. So I'm usually out in the water by myself.

I love tropical oceans. I don't swim in it, I just kind of walk in the water and look for seashells. There is a real beach about a few hrs drive but the water is cold I used to just lay down on the sand. yeah if you like surfing then shark is something to be considered about, but at least so far you have been lucky. I always wonder what is it like living under the ocean, with sand under our feet. There is this hotel or resort built under the ocean, if I ever win a lottery I'll definitely go there. It's very expensive obviously. Don't remember the name but I'll find out the information when the time comes.

In my home country it is only possible to swim in the sea during the summer time if the weather has been hot enough to heat it up a bit. My local beaches have mud that is dangerous to get stuck in. Some people have drowned due to the strong tide which is really sad. I love to travel and have visited many tropical beaches in countries like the Seychelles. I have really enjoying swimming in the ocean and going snorkeling in those sorts of destinations. I have snorkeled with nurse sharks in Belize and black tipped sharks in French Polynesia. It is that larger sharks that can be dangerous. I have been to those lovely countries on the other side, Australia and New Zealand.

That's the way it is in this country. We can only go to the beach in the summertime. It's just too cold to go in the winter. On the other hand, my parents went to Florida in the winter one time, expecting it to be cold down there. They said they burned up in the clothes they took! This must have been before I was born because I don't remember anything about it.
I went snorkeling when I went to The Bahamas in 1990. That was a lot of fun!
I think the sharks they have problems with mostly in Florida and Gulf Shores, Alabama are Great Whites. I'm sure there are other problem sharks down there as well. Kathy.

I don't think ocean goes into the sky, I always think that the sky is getting down to touch the ocean, doesn't it look like sky and ocean hugging each other at some point.
That is so lovely scene. I love it. I have been to ocean only once in my life and I cheer that moment to me. I have spent over a wekk at the bank of the sea. I could really hear the sound of see waves. It was so lovely to hear those sounds. Hi cyrus, I saw a documentary last year where this man was swimming with sharks and apparently they can't stand the smell of shampoo so the tip was to lather up your whole body before getting in the water.
When I'm in the sea I tend to look back to shore with the splendid views of the mountains behind the beach, it's a wonderful sight and I'm lucky to have the sea very nearby.

I always thought the ocean and the Gulf Of Mexico were the same because whenever I used to go to Gulf Shores, Alabama, that's where I always went swimming. No, I wouldn't say you're deprived because the gulf is so much like the Atlantic Ocean, anyway. I live in Jasper, Alabama, which is a little over 600 miles from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. They're just right near the Alabama-Florida state line. I haven't been down there in over twenty years but whenever my family and I went down there, it was so much like Florida to us.
