Ok, one of my kitties is always hacking out hairballs. Everyday when I come home there is one on my couch cover, and sometimes on the floor in random places. Today there was one on the stairs. Since it was still a bit dark and I didn't expect to encounter anything on the stairs, I stepped in it. YUCK! I know I need to take him to the vet and get some medicine. Until I take him, I was wondering what your best remedies have been. Which food do you think helps the best with hairballs. There are quite a few out there and I have tried some. Right now I'm going to switch their dry foot to the Science Diet Hairball one and see how that works out. Unfortunately the one that hacks the hairballs doesn't like dry food as much as my other two kitties.

I can't afford Science Diet for my two guys. I have to go for a cheaper over the counter brand. With these 2 guys & my last two cats, I have found Meow Mix Hairball Remedy to do the best for my babies. I've NEVER had a cat that willingly took the Hairball medicine. With these two guys, I've had a couple of times that the MMHR was out of stock so I purchased another brand of Hairball Remedy & my cats refused to eat it. Then when I finally found the Meow Mix Hairball again, they ate like a pig!!! One of my guys is a long haired cat. I've been feeding him Meow Mix Hairball since I weened him off of kitten food. He has NEVER hocked up a hairball. My female that used to get chocked on the hairballs she needed to throw up quit having any problem at all once I switched her to Meow Mix Hairball. I worked with a lady who was an animal advocate. She had 4 cats. She always bought a jar of Vaseline, opened it up & tossed the lid. She sat it on the tank of her toilet & let the cats lick it when they felt the urge. She swore her cats NEVER had hairballs. Good luck with your baby!!!

I really can't afford Science Diet either. My friend gave me her leftover bag. Her cat is 22 years old and sick. That was all he was eating. Now he can't really eat much of anything. She fees him with a dropper. So, I figure I would try that food and hopefully it will help with the hairballs. After I'm done with this bag, I will try the Meow Mix. When I was little, we used to give one of our cats he hairball medicine. I remember we had to put it on their tongues, and it would stick there....and they hated it. (But kind of funny to watch them trying to get it off ....) The vaseline treatment is interesting. Thanks for your post and advice.

Is your kitty a long haired cat? They seem to have more problems with hair balls. We feed our shorty haired kitty 9lives and give her Friskies hairball remedy and that works for her. You give 3 to 6 pieces every day until the kitty stops spitting up the hair ball then give it to them once w week. As long as we remember to give this to her we don't have a hairball problem.

The kitty is actually the one on my avatar. He has short hair. He enjoys grooming my other kitty that does have longer hair. I think that is the problem. I'm just starting him on the hairball food, so we will see what happens. Will look for the Friskies hairbal remedy. Thanks so much!

I have a long haird full grown cat and he was constantly getting hair balls, the vet told me to put a 1/4 of a tsp of metamucil in his wet food, and this helps break things down....maybe that would help?? It sure did work for my cat.
