The Best Mascara

I've been looking for the best mascara. I write product reviews on Reviewstream, and makeup reviews almost always get accepted by Reviewstream, so naturally I'm interested in makeup. Well, more than I was.
Anyway, I've read a lot of "Top Ten" lists and it always seems to be someone shilling for a specific product, although there are some good lists out there that don't seem like blatant promotion. I've tried some different mascaras - some were bad, some are o.k., some are better - and my aunt has also tried a few, including one that makes a lot of top ten lists (L'ancome Fatale, I got it for her as a gift with some gift cards I earned online). I've tried stuff from Almay (not a fan), CoverGirl, Maybelline, etc... but so many of them are boring blacks and browns.
My thing is that I want a mascara that really brings out the color of my eyes. I have hazel eyes that can be kind of blah if I wear the wrong makeup. I like the color of Almay Intense i-Color but I LOATHE the formula. I like the formula from CoverGirl's Exact Eyelights but it doesn't seem to give enough volume and really doesn't bring out the color of my eyes. I'd like to find a good purple mascara and have heard that Urban Decay's Big Fatty is good, but wearing a mascara that isn't hypoallergenic enough really makes my eyes burn (and run, which makes my mascara run, too...).
All of this searching, and still no fantastic masacara. Will I ever find my Makeup Graille without spending $50 per tube?Anyway, to make a long story short: what is YOUR favorite mascara (and if it's an expensive one, how do you justify the price)? And does anyone know of some nice purple mascara that's less likely to make my eyes itch? I'm willing to pay a little more per tube, but I don't want to shell out a fortune for mediocre makeup.
PS - Before anyone asks, the link to my blog's in my profile if you want to know how I earned those gift cards.
