Should there be security guards at schools?

Now a days kids have gotten out of hands bringing guns and other weapons to school. Schools have become an unsafe place for kids. I think it would be a good idea to put security guards in school. I think this might lower the crime rate in schools. For kids to see someone of a higher authority there in uniform might scare them enough to the point where there will be no weapons brought to school. This would be a good benifet to the schools. It would make it safer for the kids and teachers. It would also give a warm safe feeling to everyone.

of course, there should be security guards on campus. it's not just about protecting children from unruly/violent classmates but also protecting them from outsiders like kidnappers.

I fully agree. Not only the threat is from children bringing weapon to schools, the terror is from outsiders harming children also. The security is needed in schools for smooth running of schools and for keeping children safe

here in our country only private schools have security guards, public schools don't have.. and you are right, it is much safer to have them so that our kids will be safe and parents would not think danger things being far away with their kids..

Why, you mean schools in your place do not post security guards? In our place i have not seen a school that doesn't have security guards. I agree though that there should be security guards at shchools. And not just ordinary guard they should be properly trained like in the military and they should look fearful and strong. Someone whom when you look at you will feel safe.

The security guard should be entrusted the work of checking the bags and other items of the students whenever he is doubtful and the students should co operate with him, he should be alert or just a posting in uniform in schools will not do much a change.

As a kid being in high school myself i disagree i think the security guards provoke some of the violence kids try to test the water on what they can get away with. Before i moved i had cops in my school and ther was more violence when the cops were there then when they werent..and when i moved my new school doesnt have anything like that and thers barely any violence..so i think security guards are a very bad idea

Security guards are a good idea for schools, especially if the school is in a bad area or has students coming from bad areas. By bad areas, I mean where a lot of gang activity is located. The school our boys go to doesn't have a security guard person but what the school has done to protect the kids is to make the school a closed campus. During the day when the kids are in school, you can not get onto the school campus except for one way, and that is through the school office. All of the gates in and out of the school are locked during school hours. I am comfortable with this arrangement because it definitely keeps out people and stray animals that could bring in rabies or biting. I believe that most of the schools in our town, even the high schools have had to do this, for safety reasons. Once the boys are in high school, I hope that there will be metal detectors and security guards or something like that because I have a lot of fears about that. My own high school years were unpleasant and I don't want that for my boys.

Yes. I think they do need security guards at schools these days. Some of the children have gotten way out of control. We need to make sure that our kids are safe and a security guard would definitely be able to help that matter.

hello tuckersheri, I agree to that idea. Having a security guard/s in school will not only protect our children but also the employees as well. This way, parents like us will have a peace of mind that our children are really safe there. Private schools here has security guards. Even in public but elementary level only. They should put guards in high school - public also to reframe the teens in bringing pointed object like knife, icespeak, etc. This way, our children will be safer.

The schools in my city use to have a city police officer in each middle and high school but, with the economy the way that it is the city had to lay off so many police that now, just the "problem" schools have police in them.

I think schools should be safe places. If it´s necesary to have someone to chack on student´s lockers and bags, I´d accept it as a parent. It seems that nowadays children are full of rights but they don´t know the first thing about the word "duty". People have to deserve freedom. It is not a given. And my freedom ends wqhere yours begins.

Our local school's each have 2 police officer's on duty. Just in case. In fact the first week of school, I will be at my kid's school keeping an eye on thing's. The second week Captain Ross will be in there.

Yes I think so, its always good to see the guards there, you can only hope nothing bad will happen at your kids school.really sad when things get so bad that the guards are actually needed.

In my old middle school and high school they had security guards. It did help a lot. Im not sure where you live, but if in your area they arent doing anything, you should go to the board of education or something to request that they provide security guards. It helps a lot. I mean, there is still crime, of course, but it significantly dropped :]

I would definitely say "YES" to this.. Too much freedom creates violence.. And its all for the safety of everyone. I don't know why some schools don't have security guards its the most basic step of security or the first line of defense..

Yes,i agree with you,it is very important to have security guards at shools with the purpose to creat a safe environment for all the kids. You know this can prevent or at least lower the crime not only from the inside of the school, but also from the outside. You see now more and more kids have something to do with the outside, and they could be very helpless is they might face those terrible things which could happan to them from the outside of the school. So then,I think the security guards at schools are much more important than what teachers and parents can actually do.
