Sleep paralysis is a condition in which someone, most often lying in a supine (face up) position, about to drop off to sleep, or just upon awaking from sleep realizes that she/he is unable to move, or speak, or cry out. This may last a few seconds or several moments, occasionally longer. People frequently report feeling a 'presence' that is often described as malevolent, threatening, or evil. An intense sense of dread and terror is very common. The presence is likely to be vaguely felt or sensed just out of sight but thought to be watching or monitoring, often with intense interest, sometimes standing by, or sitting on the bed. On some occasions, the presence may attack, strangling and exerting crushing pressure on the chest.... So did u experience anything like this?? I experienced this once and it was very frightening. I was trying to call out but I think I just made a little squeak. Thanks God I felt no malevolent presence as it was bad enough as it was!

Yup even i wouldn't want to think that way. There are scientific explanations for it...

That happened to me once, a long time ago. I will never forget that feeling! It was awful. I woke up from a nightmare of sorts and couldn't move for what seemed like a long time.

This is absolutely frightening! I have participated in Sleep Studies for this and while their explanation makes sense about how and why it happends, as far as being in REM sleep, the body paralyzes itself while in a deep sleep to prevent you from acting out your dreams and hurting yourself, etc... I would probably actually buy that theory if sleep paralysis came over me as I was wakening, but that is not the case with me, and never once have I had an episode where I am coming out of sleep. Mine always occurs right as I am falling asleep, or shortly after I have laid down to go to sleep. But I have never been asleep when it occurs. I am in a twilight mode, where I am just starting to doze off. If you've noticed all the analysis on SP says it only occurs when the person is just waking up and coming out of a sleep or as a person is falling off to sleep. So I don't get how their theory can apply to those whom only experience it as they are drifting off to sleep, because the body hasn't reached that state of sleep yet where the defense mechanism of paralyzing itself should be kicking in and I don't believe that you are paralyzed during your entire sleep duration, because think of all the times you have tossed and turned all night and you weren't even aware you were doing it but your significant other told you how you were squirming all night, tossing and turning, taking up the whole bed, etc... So you DO move in your sleep, which confirms that this defense mechanism isn't always in effect the entire time you are sleeping. It does sound plausible to me that this is the case for those who are coming up out of their sleep, but what is the explanation for it occuring as people are just starting to fall asleep and haven't been fully engaged in sleep just yet? No one can answer that question, not even those who conducted the sleep study. So until I have an explanation for this particular time of occurance, I tend to think it's something far more sinister, as I always sense an evil presence in the room , but from afar, as if I'm being observed... not watched, merely observed, but it is an extremely evil presence that has caused me to get out of my bed and vacte the premises. What on Earth could cause such a feeling, especially one that is shared by so many others, at first I thought maybe it was just me that felt this way, but I am both shocked and relieved to find that others describe it the same exact way. I don't know what to make of it. I've suffered from SP all my life, with my first episode occuring as a child, then never again til my teens, which I was plagued by frequent episodes on an ongoing basis, then it subsided for a few yesrs only to return in my 20's hell bent on making nighttime an absolute horror for me. Then it was off and on with a sporadic kind of pattern, then subsided for years without an episode, only to come raging back with full force in my 30's. What could cause such inconsistency? I have yet to figure it out, and no one can seem to answer that one wuestion, as to what the explanation is for it occuring when not even asleep yet, just merely dozing off. I really wish someone could provide some kind of explanation because until then, I always dread in the back of my mind the night that it will happen again. It has even happened as I would begin doze off during the day for a little catnap, but for the most part, it is a nocturnal event for me.
