Cleaning out my closet - FINALLY!

I'm finally cleaning out my closet - I have SOOO many clothes that I just need to get rid of. In order to make money, though, I'm actually consigning them (selling them) to a consignment shop - and using that to save up for next semester's tuition! I thought that was a pretty slick idea. A lot of my old clothes are designer brands. So why not, right? I never knew I had quite as much as I do (or did, though). I've already consigned about 50 items from my closet and I still have about 1/3 of the way left to go. (I've been doing it little by little, re-cleaning things and ironing them and what not). How often do you "clean out your closet"? And what do you do with what you don't want? Have you ever CONSIGNED your clothes from your closet - instead of just donating them?

Yay - I like your idea a lot - very slick, lol. I usually don't go through my closet too often, but I usually go through and clean it out whenever I hear that someone is in need. Most recently, there was a young single mother in my area who's apt. burned down and left her with nothing but herself and her son. I went through my closet, got together all the things I could of my own, got together some things for her son (my son is only a few years older than hers), including toys and things. It works for me because I feel good about helping someone, and it forces me to go through my things and his. Good luck with your consigning!

wow, that's nice. I have cleaned my closet over a month now and i must say, I'm gonna have to do this again. this so tiring when i just kept messing my clothes up. well, regarding old clothes, i just give it away to some of my relatives who are poor and young enough...to fit my old clothes..

I don't think it is a slick idea... Great IDEA. once you dont use them anymore then why dont you exchange for some money back... lolz. I just did last June. I did the garage sale and I got a lot from them. I take care of them and they still look new to many people... Of course re wash them and iron them too.

I actually did not know you could consign them. I have seen and even shopped at consignment shops but I didn't know that you could sell your clothes to them!! I clean out my closet about once every two or three years, but then again I am anti-stereo typical female. I don't shop very often (unless I absolutely need a new what ever for work) other that that I still wear some of my high school stuff and I graduated in 2002! And when I do clean out my closet, none of my stuff is really re-usable/sellable, cuz I normally wear them down to the threads.

I've never actually taken my unneeded stuff to a consignment shop, but when we clean out our closets, we always plan for a massive yard sale. I have myself, my husband and our two children. For the last yard sale I had we had an entire truckload of clothes that the kids had outgrown as well as some window unit air conditioners that we no longer needed (we had central air installed in our house last year) a few of my daughter's big toys that she said she was too old for and things like that. I ended up making close to 200 dollars in two days. Still have a ton of stuff left over though, but I will save it for the next yard sale as it would require rewashing everything to consign it because of stickers and safety pins with prices on them.

I don't clean it out nearly often enough. I have so many clothes it's ridiculous. I usually go through once a year and make a big donation. Not sure about consignment shops. I usually donate them. Maybe try eBay? Consignment shops always take a commission and they can just sit and sit. I'd try eBay first.

hi maezee hmm how often do I clean out my closet? oh dear'it need it so badly and I am again hard put to just throw things out, and I have no way now to get to a consignment store. when I was still in our apartment,I used to take my good but never worn stuff to this consignment store and the money I got went to pay bills so it was really great. now I am in this retirement center and what I could do,as I have seen others do, is bring my cast offs downstairs and let people pick out anything they might be able to use. so now I just need to put myself to the acid test of deciding what to discard. Why do I hang onto clothes that I have not worn in years? this makes me so mad at myself. wow.
