How do you generate traffic for your blog?

I have recently created a blog online that helps prevent boredom online. It does so by linking to other websites that have content that is useful to kill time. The problem is, as with any other new blog, I get very little traffic to my site (maybe 4-6 hits per day). Are there any strategies that you have found useful to generate traffic?

I have had awesome success with linkreferral.com. It takes a bit of work, you have to review the sites of other bloggers, view sites, and post in their forum, but it's a great site and the reviews of my site by others has been really helpful. I have gotten several followers from there in just a few days. It is well worth the effort required. I also use twitter. One Twitter trick I have just tried tonight is to direct message all of the people who have messaged me. I figure they spammed me first, so turn about is fair play. Just go to your direct message inbox, go to messages you have received and you can send your message to each of them. I'll let you know how it worked. Two other great sources of traffic for me have been vinefire and ListJoe. (Note: I haven't posted a single referral link here, just trying to help). Another good reasource is to find forums that allow you to post your links. Even forums that don't allow direct link posting may allow you to have your link in your signature line. I also use Microworkers to promote my site. I wait until I complete enough tasks to have earned enough money to post my own, then I just have people go to my site as their task. Try these and you should get some traffic. Good luck!

I agree with you firemom that linkreferral is a good site for traffic. But as you say it is a bit time consuming but I've found it to be very effective, not only in gaining traffic but also for providing valuable feedback for site improvement.
I have few friends that added to my blog list and I believe that they are visiting regularly in my blog. I am as well doing a constant visit to their sites. It's a symbiotic relationship.@slogger (48)

Thanks for the post firemom! How long do you usually spend a day trying to increase the traffic to your site? I am looking for a way that might take a lot of work at first but will later require little additional time. (not even sure if a way like that exists!) Thanks!

There are different strategies. A big part of getting traffic is just having a lot of stuff on your blog and up for a while to get picked up by the search engines. Lately, I have found using twitter and tweeting about my new blog posts has been a good way yo get traffic.

I regularly search twitter for those tweeting about the kind of things I blog for and follow them in hopes they follow me. I do not have even 30 followers, but I get at least half as many views from twitter as I have followers and it seems to continue at least 50% of hits based on my number of followers as I get more followers. I have a feeling, though, it is not all followers that I am getting the hits from, but I do know I am getting decent hits from my tweets, as I use bit.ly to track my shortened urls and hits from them.

Oh and by the way a few other traffic generating tips are to have 'keyword-rich' headlines for each post if possible. This will cause you to start generating more free traffic from the search engines. Some other great traffic programs that I use are AdlandPro and Linkscout. These are 2 of the best free traffic generators that I've tested. I have been a member of both for quite a while and they're a keeper for me!
